Steve Cocchiola Names Ohio Music Education Association Educator of the Year

Congratulations to Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School Director of Bands and Orchestras, Mr. Steve Cocchiola, who was announced as the Ohio Music Education Association Educator of the Year last evening before the Holiday Band Concert.

Mr. Brad Stevens, OMEA President-Elect, was present last evening to announce the selection of Mr. Cocchiola as this year's OMEA Educator of the Year Award recipient. Mr. Stevens shared that Mr. Cocchiola was nominated by a professional colleague from the OMEA membership based on his creativity, understanding of music education philosophies, and demonstration of professional collegiality. Mr. Cocchiola will be formally recognized at this year's OMEA State Conference in February.

We are proud of this outstanding recognition for Mr. Cocchiola and this well-deserved honor. Thanks to all who have shared many positive stories and notes about your excitement for Mr. Cocchiola's recognition since last evening's announcement!

BBHHS Teacher Elected to Ohio House of Representatives

This past November, Mr. Sean Brennan, was elected to serve his first term in the Ohio House of Representatives serving the 14th District. His election means he will retire from the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District after nearly 30 years of service.

Mr. Brennan has demonstrated a commitment to the students and staff at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School during his distinguished career. He has helped give students a deeper understanding of United States History, United States Government principles, and foundations and introduced them to the American Legal System. Students in his courses experienced his passion for local government and community service as they attended local governmental meetings to gain a first-hand account of what takes place at the legislative level for the communities in which they reside and made annual visits to the Ohio State House (where he now will serve) to learn about State operations. During his career as an educator, he has earned many awards, served on state and district committees related to the instruction of Social Studies and their standards, and was recognized by students for his talent and passion for their learning and growth.

This coming week will be Mr. Brennan's last week with the district, and we wish him well both in his retirement from BBHHS and his newly elected position in the Ohio House of Representatives.
