Annual Meeting Registration is Now Open!
It certainly doesn’t feel like a year since I wrote a newsletter post to recruit abstracts and announce plenary speakers for our Annual Joint Meeting with USAHA. Still, I am, already recruiting for our meeting in Nashville with Dr. Tanya LeRoith, our President-elect and Program Chair! Dr. LeRoith and the Program Committee have done a great job of putting our plenary and scientific programs together. I hope to see many of you in Tennessee in under 3 months! Remember the Foundation Dinner and Auction – who will have the hottest auction item? Dr. Zeman’s long horns look great in his winter office.
Please consider looking at the membership roster for your laboratory. We have great options for student, associate, and full memberships if you have new staff or staff with lapsed membership. For all new members, please feel free to attend committee meetings. You don't need to sign up ahead of time, there are very few closed sessions, which are marked in the program. Remember, there is an app for that!
Before the annual meeting, please look out for ballots for Board of Director positions, which are open for 3-year terms. Regions 1, 3, 5, and 7 will be voting, and all members will vote for a new Vice President. Watch for scientific program updates from Dr. LeRoith and be sure to know the deadlines coming up. The deadlines are essential for all volunteers putting this program together for our membership.
Enjoy the rest of your summer; there is still plenty left.

Canine glioma in the first year of life: 5 cases, dos Santos et al.
Abstract. Most canine gliomas occur in adult and aged dogs, and reports in puppies <12-mo-old are exceedingly rare. Here we describe the occurrence of gliomas in 5 dogs ≤12-mo-old. The affected patients (4 males, 1 female) were 3–12-mo-old (x̄ = 6.6-mo-old). None of the dogs were brachycephalic. Clinical signs consisted of dullness (2 cases), seizures (2 cases), vestibular signs, and deafness (1 case each). All patients were euthanized. Grossly, neoplasms were pale-tan or red, soft masses in the telencephalon (4 cases) or gelatinous leptomeningeal thickening in the brain and spinal cord (1 case). Neoplasms were classified as astrocytomas (3 cases) and oligodendrogliomas (2 cases) based on histology or histology and IHC. Our findings confirm that, while exceptionally rare, canine gliomas occur in the first year of life, and are clinically, morphologically, and immunohistochemically similar to gliomas in adult and aged dogs. Interstitial lung diseases frequently represent a diagnostic challenge for veterinary diagnosticians. This challenge can be identified at all stages of diagnosis, particularly with gross and histologic interpretation. Moreover, each animal species varies in pulmonary physiology, pathology, and frequency of different diseases, which add more layers of complexity to this already difficult pattern. We aim to expand our knowledge of this intricate pattern to better investigate our lung submissions, describe lesions, and finally diagnose interstitial lung diseases.
We are inviting submissions to a JVDI special section on Interstitial lung disease in domestic animals to be guest edited by Dr. Francisco R. Carvallo, Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech, and Dr. Jeff Caswell, Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph.
If you are interested, please submit an abstract of up to 250 words describing your proposed topic by September 30, 2024.
Primary research papers, case series, and reviews of a focused topic will be considered, as will single-animal case reports if they are novel and include a review of the literature on the focused topic of the report. For abstracts on topics considered suitable for the special issue, authors will be notified by October 30, 2024, and full submissions will be expected by April 30, 2025. Submitted manuscripts will proceed through the usual JVDI peer-review and editorial processes, with publications expected in the fall of 2025. Page charges of $75/printed page will apply - there is no color page charge for online-only publications.
Please submit your abstract to guest editor Dr. Francisco R. Carvallo, fcarvallo@vt.edu
