What unique challenges does an individual with Parkinson’s disease face? How can caregivers and loved ones best help alleviate these stressors?

Progressive mobility issues are the most significant challenge associated with Parkinson’s disease; however, a lesser-known symptom faced by those with the disease is a regression in communication skills. People with Parkinson’s may have trouble starting sentences or keeping track of conversations and may begin to speak in such a low tone that others struggle to understand them. A lack of substantial communication puts the individual at greater risk for isolation and negative impact on their mental health.


Caregivers can offer support simply by researching and understanding the challenges their loved one with Parkinson’s faces when it comes to communication. SCRC offers several resources on empathetic and effective communication strategies, as well as caring for someone with Parkinson’s, including:


Continue talking to, listening to, and helping your care receiver interact with their environment. By learning more about Parkinson’s disease and its effects on your loved one, you can ensure that they continue to feel comfortable communicating with you, verbally or non-verbally.

Caring4Cal

Introducing Caring4Cal, a workforce training program funded by the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI)


Caring4Cal is a workforce development program created to expand, enhance, and strengthen California's Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS) through free training, coaching, and incentives paid up to $2,750.


This initiative works to increase access to health services for rural communities, children with complex medical conditions, individuals with disabilities, and care for older adults.


Licensed or certified healthcare providers who would like to work in-home and those who would like to start a career providing care in-home and community settings have access to the following services:

  • Hundreds of no-cost training courses that boost care provider skills and accelerate careers
  • Free personal coaching to help set goals, develop an action plan, and stay on track
  • Paid incentives of up to $2,750 for eligible care providers


Caring4Cal supports Californians in developing the skills and knowledge essential to starting or growing a career as a licensed or certified healthcare provider in the home and community.
