The Mountain House. The Carroll Family Homestead

"The Carroll house at the foot of St. Sauveur mountain was built in 1825 by John Carroll, who was born in Borrisoleigh, Ireland, October 8, 1790, and sailed from Waterford, Ireland, for America on May 24, 1814…The timbers in the house are hand-hewn and the frame put together with wooden pins. When the rooms were plastered, as hand-made laths were slow of manufacture, boards were nailed to the walls and then split in many places with an axe as a foundation for the plaster. Sheets of birch bark were nailed or pegged to the outer walls and roof before the hand-made clapboards and shingles were nailed on. The plaster originally put on is in all the rooms today." -Traditions and Records of Southwest Harbor and Somesville, Mount Desert Island, Maine” by Mrs. Seth S. Thornton, 1938, p. 127-129.
