JULY 11, 2024

MAYOR'S MESSAGE

The good times keep rolling along this summer, and all over town countless people are enjoying our beaches, local businesses, and the many events and activities that help make Sea Isle City the popular destination it is!

In recent weeks – during which we have had some amazingly beautiful weather – several notable events have taken place that were very successful, including on June 29, when the Dave Farina Men’s Basketball Tournament featured seven teams of talented players, and the Stomp Cancer Run-Walk brought over 1000 people to Sea Isle City’s Promenade.

CITY COUNCIL'S MESSAGE

The July 9 City Council meeting was rather brief and did not involve any ordinances. Similarly, the Consent Agenda for that meeting was also brief, however each of the resolutions that it contained were approved, including…

  • Resolution 130, which approved the latest round of Vouchers (the system that the City utilizes for the purchase and payment of goods and services).
  • Resolution 131, which authorized two Refunds of $65 each for Recreation Program Registrations.
  • Resolution 132, which authorized a National Co-Op Contract totaling $384,210 (which included a vehicle trade-in) for the purchase of a Combination Jet/Vac Truck from H. A. DeHart & Son, of Thorofare, NJ, for the Sea Isle City Water & Sewer Department. A Jet/Vac Truck is used to clear sanitary and storm sewer systems, perform routine maintenance to help prevent clogs in the sewer systems, and clear trenches during municipal projects.

The next City Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 23, at 10:00 AM on the third floor of City Hall.

City Council hopes that everyone enjoyed the July Fourth holiday and the city’s annual Independence Day fireworks display – and that you are having a safe and pleasant summer!

Best regards from the members of City Council,

Council President Bill Kehner (wkehner@seaislecitynj.us)

PHILLIES HOME RUN DERBY

Batting Competition

For Boys & Girls on July 14

Sea Isle City’s Recreation Office will host the 2024 Philadelphia Phillies Home Run Derby for boys and girls (ages 7 to 12) on Sunday, July 14, at Dealy Field. During this popular batting competition, children will swing at balls thrown from a mechanical pitching machine, and prizes will be awarded to the day’s top sluggers. The event’s top batters will be invited to advance to the next round of competition – and possibly to the Home Run Derby Championship at Citizens Bank Park later this year.

Onsite registration for the Home Run Derby begins at 9:00 AM at Dealy Field on July 14. The competition will begin at 10:00 AM, when boys (ages 9-10) and all girls (ages 7-12) will swing-away for prizes. Then at 12 noon, the remaining boys (ages 7-8 and 11-12) will compete. For more information about the Home Run Derby, phone 609-263-0050.

ONE-MILE OCEAN SWIM

The Public Is Invited To Participate In Annual

Ocean Swim Competition on July 20

The Sea Isle City Beach Patrol will host their annual 1-Mile Ocean Swim on Saturday, July 20, at 11:00 AM. The starting line for this box swim will be at the water's edge on the 61st Street Beach, which means the participants will swim north to the finish line on the 44th Street Beach. If extreme currents run north-to-south on race day, the starting line will be switched to 27th Street in an effort to allow participants to swim with the current.

Mail-in Registration is not available for this event. Online pre-registration ($30 per swimmer) closes on July 18 at 11:00 PM. Race Day registration ($40.00 per swimmer) is available on July 20 between 9:00 and 10:30 AM. Online team pre-registration ($32 per swimmer) closes on July 18 at 11:00 PM. Race Day Team registration ($42.00 per swimmer) is available on July 20 between 9:00 and 10:30 AM. This is a rain-or-shine event; however, an electrical storm or dangerous surf conditions will necessitate resetting the start time until later in the day. If conditions do not improve, the swim will be cancelled. Weather cancellations will be announced on the home page of the beach patrol's website. For more information about the SICBP’s 2024 One-Mile Ocean Swim, go to the “Events” page at https://sicbp.com/ or phone 609-263-3655.

During this annual fundraiser, the public can purchase grilled hot dogs, soft drinks and snacks for $1 each. Also, commemorative tee-shirts will be sold (while supplies last) and several items will be raffled-off, including a basket of cheer and a variety of autographed sports memorabilia from the Phillies, Flyers, Union, and other Philadelphia-based sports teams. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Auxiliary’s ongoing efforts to support our nation’s veterans and active-duty military members. The cost is $25 per person. During this event, male and female participants (ages 14 to 17) will be introduced to basic lifesaving skills and rescue techniques as an educational and physical training foundation for prospective beach patrol employees. Junior lifeguards developing through the program to the advanced level (who are age 16 or older) may be selected for employment with the SICBP upon graduating from the program in August. Also, preference on hiring at the beginning of each summer season is given to individuals who have participated in this program. Enrollment is limited to the first 40 applicants. TURTLES CROSSING

Watch For Turtles In The Road

Please drive slowly and be on the look-out for Diamondback Terrapin Turtles as they cross our busy roads in search of nesting locations.  If you see a turtle crossing the street and you want to assist her, please help her continue in the direction she is headed if you are able – BUT ALWAYS THINK “SAFETY FIRST” and use caution whenever you step into the street.

Please don't stand over turtles taking photos while they are nesting...this may frighten the turtle and she might walk away.

If you see an injured turtle, please call Susan or Steve Ahern, of Sea Isle Terrapin Rescue, at 609-263-7358. If the Aherns are not available, please follow the instructions on their answering machine.
