MLK Evensong, this Sunday at 5 pm
This Sunday at 5 pm is one of the most beautiful and anticipated events of the year at St. James’s – MLK Evensong. Once again, the incredible Concert Choir of Norfolk State University will be joined by St. James’s Choirs. And for the last time, renowned organist and guest conductor Dr. Carl Haywood will be part of this stirring and powerful program.
We’ll also hear speeches from Dr. King, including “I Have a Dream” read by Kym Grinnage, general manager of NBC12.
Please make every effort to celebrate the brilliance and inspiration of Dr. King at our Evensong event, which will also be live-streamed for those of you who can’t be there in person.

Everyone can be a part of our MLK Service Project this Sunday.

This Sunday during formation hour (10:15 to 11 am), you can be part of our MLK Service Project for all ages in Valentine Hall. Come join us and do service in preparation for our Bridge Week at Caritas.
There are four different activities you can participate in:
- Decorate placemats to bring cheer at meal times
- Fill backpacks with a notebook, pens, and good luck card
- Make cookies
- Cook chili

Our Young Family Social is this Saturday, January 14th, from 4 to 6 pm at Mary Beth and Chris Abplanalp’s house
(8346 W. Weyburn Road).
St. James will provide snacks, water, and lemonade. Parents are encouraged to bring a favorite beverage. We hope to see you there!

Announcing a New Wednesday Night Class.
Created for everyone, from newcomers to long-timers.
Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 1, we'll be launching a new 8-week Wednesday night class for long-time members, newcomers, and everyone in between. Each class will consist of dinner, a short presentation, and small group discussion.
Topics will include the essentials of our faith, the Episcopal Church, and life at St. James’s. This class will fulfill the requirement for adult confirmation/reception, but we hope everyone will take this opportunity to reconnect with God, our church, and each other.

Caritas Bridge Week is changing.
There are so many ways to be a
DOER.
January 20-26
The beautiful new CARITAS Center is now housing the Women’s Shelter guests, so instead of hosting CARITAS shelter guests here at St. James's like we've done in the past, St. James’ers are now invited to help provide food, fellowship, and fun right on-site at the shelter during the week of January 20-26.
There are so many ways for you to help, including preparing and serving breakfast, preparing and dropping off lunch, preparing dinner at St. James’s and serving it at the shelter, providing evening entertainment, and going on a CARITAS Center tour. You can also donate back packs!
The CARITAS Center is at 2220 Stockton St., Richmond VA 23224
Please no elementary/middle school age children at the shelter. High schoolers may participate at your own discretion.

A New Women's Bible Study Group
We’re excited to announce that there’s a new women’s bible study called Women in Fellowship here at St. James’s. It’s been created for women in their 30s, 40s and 50s but don’t worry 20 somethings or 60+ somethings, we won’t be checking IDS.
What we will be doing is gathering on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month from 7 to 8:30 pm in the home of a group member for fellowship, study, discussion, prayer, and fitting our faith into daily life and actions. The second meeting, happening Thursday, January 26, the meeting will be at Laura Stricker’s home (1238 Rothesay Circle, 23221)
We’ll be following the lectionary, and reading and discussing the upcoming week’s Gospel. We’ll close in prayer for each other and those in need.

Why so many emails?
Our normal weekly email schedule is Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
But there’s so much happening right now that it’s been hard to stick with that schedule. What with Annual Giving, MLK Evensong, Mardi Gras, Doers Doing, and so many other things going on around here, we’ve felt the need to send more emails than usual.
We haven’t noticed a dip in interest but we’ll make every effort to return to our normal schedule next week. Thanks!
