End-of-year Surprises!

Food 4 Kids recently received two wonderful gifts. The Vela Foundation, a private grant-making foundation dedicated to promoting improved nutrition and wellness for families in eastern Massachusetts, awarded us a very generous grant. And an individual surprised us with another wonderful donation. We are incredibly grateful for the continued generosity of the communities we serve!

Food insecurity means they're struggling financially to consistently and reliably access nutritious food. Every week, there's this mental and stressful struggle to figure out: How am I going to feed my children? (Sarah Cluggish, Chief Program Office for Project Bread)

The need is real, the need continues

The Massachusetts Department of Early and Secondary Education data show 37% of students in the 8 towns of the lower/outer Cape are participating in at least one state-administered program to assist low-income families this school year. At the same time, Feeding America estimates that at least 1/3 of food insecure children/teens on Cape Cod do not qualify for these programs because their household incomes are too high. Our cost of living pushes more families to and over the edge than state and federal poverty norms recognize. True food insecurity among children/teens in the 8 towns we serve could be as high as 56%. The parents in these food insecure families are often the ones providing the services vital to our local economy, vital to everyone: those working retail, healthcare, construction, fishing, hospitality and more.
