THE MANNA – BREAD OF LIFE

The Old Testament has many things or incidences that are prophetic in nature, typology, which is revealed in the New Testament. Many such incidences are not taught in our churches. Yet, as we read the written word, Holy Spirit (Our Teacher) reveals the true significance of these things to our understanding.

One such incident occurred as Israel wandered for 40 years in the wilderness following their release from Egypt.

With over two million (possibly 4 or 5 million) people, their food supply was critical. There came a point where there simply was no food, but God was faithful to supply for His people.

God rained down manna, a bread-like food, from heaven. This bread gave them life until they reached the promised land. It became their bread of life.

About 1,500 years later, God once again brought down bread from heaven to give life to His people. This bread of life was Jesus. Just as the manna gave the Israelites life until they reached the promised land, so also does Jesus give us life so that we also may reach our eternal promised land.

Jesus spoke specifically of this in John 6:47-58. Jesus said in vs. 47-50, “He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I AM that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness and are dead. This is (I AM) the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof and not die. I AM the living bread which came down from heaven…”

Jesus goes on to say in Vs. 53-57 that whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood shall have life in Him. He concludes in verse 58 by saying, “This is (I AM) that bread that came down from heaven, not (the same) as your fathers did eat manna and are dead. He that eateth this (my) bread shall live forever.”

The manna in the wilderness was a prophetic fore type of Jesus, Himself. This is why Holy Communion was established following the Last Supper.

How do we eat his flesh? It is by believing upon Him in faith unto salvation whereby His life (the bread) is imparted to us. Our life is in Him and His life (flesh and blood) is imparted into us. He is our bread of life. He sustains us.

OVERSHADOWING

When Mary was approached by Gabriel and told she would bear a child without a man involved she questioned how this would happen. It is not a normal thing to become pregnant without a man involved. Gabriel answered her and said, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”

This verse shows the trinity of God in action. First, The Holy Spirit would come upon her. Then the power (which is dunamis) or miraculous power of the Father would overshadow her. To overshadow is used in scripture to identify God the Father. When He overshadowed her, it was not something natural. God, himself covered her and brought the seed to her. It was an act of divine meeting the natural in such a way as Mary would receive the seed. This seed was the third part of the trinity, Jesus, the Christ.

Let’s talk about being overshadowed. There is another place in scripture where this word is used. We find it Mark chapter 9. Jesus, James, John, and Peter went up to a high mountain. Jesus was suddenly transformed. His raiment (clothing) became shining, whiter than snow or anything else that was white. It was shining brilliantly. Elias (Elijah) and Moses suddenly appeared with him. The three disciples were seeing into the Spirit realm when this happened. Peter wanted to make tabernacles or booths for each of the three, but a voice came out of a cloud “overshadowing” them. God was speaking to them and overshadowed them like He did with Mary. It was a divine moment, not a natural moment. It was a moment where the fear came on them when God said, “This is my beloved Son: hear him.” This whole sequence of events was very short, but it is something that we can learn from. When Jesus was revealed in His glory it was a taste of what was to come. It is a time that nothing else matters but what He has to say to us. God wanted them to know it wasn’t about Elijah or Moses. It was about Jesus. The one whose mother was overshadowed by God when she received the seed that became Jesus.

In Psalm 91 we are told to abide under the shadow of the Almighty. This is the safest place we can be. When we are there, we find peace and shelter. God’s shadow protects us and keeps us safe. It covers us with protection.

When we become born again, we are “impregnated” with the seed of God. God, again, overshadows us or covers us with himself and we receive the incorruptible seed of God. Oh, how wonderful it is to know that we are protected from the fire of hell because of this. Satan may try to deceive us by taking us down the valley of the “shadow” of death, but in his case, there is no power unless we yield to it. It is all darkness. With the overshadowing of God, it will always bring light, just as it did on the mount of transfiguration. Let God overshadow and protect you from all harm by his covering as we dwell in the secret place. I can guarantee that it is the safest place to be.
