We're showcasing Authors this month at the Nevins Library.  Our Reader's Services department has put together a program dedicated to providing some of our local authors.  There is an interesting mix of fiction and non-fiction and mysteries.  These authors are eager to speak to you about their works and maybe even sell a copy or two.  All attendants will have a chance at a door prize to be raffled at the end of the afternoon.  check out the specifics down below....sure to be a great afternoon.
The Children's department has some cool things planned for their preschool friends and the Teens will be meeting to talk  about books, and anime and giving some great advice to their fearless leader Amy!!

Larry Giordano and Jeff Ives Talk about Their book
Ward of the State
Monday May 9, 7:00pm

Join us on Monday evening May 9th, 2016 at 7:00pm to hear Larry Giordano and Jeff Ives discuss their book "Ward of the State: Larry Giordano's Life as a Foster Kid." Mr. Giordano is a well-known Methuen resident who has served as State Representative for Methuen and as a City Councilor. He and his wife Eileen are vocal advocates for at-risk children, and especially children in foster care. He is also a longtime martial arts teacher and owner of Methuen Karate Associates.

Books will be available for sale and signing at the event. Proceeds from the book will go towards helping foster children in the Merrimack Valley.

When Seconds Count Teen Babysitting Course
Saturday May 7 9:30am-3:30pm

Back by popular demand, we will be hosting another Teen Babysitting  Course on Saturday, May 7th from 9:30am-3:30pm. Provided by the  experts at When Seconds Count, this is a full day course designed for 
teens interested in becoming responsible babysitters. Open to youth in  grades 6-9, aged 11-15. Program costs $90.00, payable before  attendance. (You may pay in cash or checks made out to the Nevins  Memorial Library.) Students must attend the full session. Teens will  get hands-on training with an certified instructor and learn all about:

· Characteristics of children
· Basic care such as feeding, changing and holding
· Supervising and playing with children
· Accident prevention
· Proper emergency response
· Basic first aid for common injuries and illnesses
Students will receive certification in infant and child CPR and 
Babysitter's Course completion certificate.

News from the Children's Department

Preschoolers will be having some fun this month with some of their favorite characters, Elephant and Piggie and Doc McStuffins.  Also, parents and kids alike can take a look at our activity boxes this month to learn more about clouds.  Finish all the activities and get a free book!

Social Security Pays a Visit to Nevins Library
May 4 1pm

Marlenin Vaszuez, a representative from the Social Security Department will be on hand here at the library to discuss the new initiative allowing people to go online and set up their own private Social Security accounts.  She will cover the basics of how to do this and will show the benefits of monitoring your own profile so that you can make the most of the benefits you are eligible for.

Local Author Fair Returns This Month!
Saturday May 14 1pm in the Great Hall

Please join us on Saturday, May 14 at 1pm for our free Local Author Fair!  This is your chance to meet many different local authors and hear about books written in our area of New England.  The authors will also have their books available for purchase.  This is a great way to support our home-grown authors.  We are expecting the following authors:  William Breen Jr., Anne Cutler, Susan Fleet, Connie Johnson Hambley, Sharon Healy-Yang, Jeff Ives & Larry Giordano, Coralie Jensen, Maureen Milliken, Liz Mugavero, Susan Oleksiw, and J.E. Tech Series...Free Technology Basic Training

If you want to learn how to better use your apps and devices, then the Nevins Library is your first stop! Join us for a free introductory class each month. Every class will focus on making a single topic  accessible to beginners. For all classes, feel free to bring your own laptop or devices!

Microsoft Word Basics Class
Monday, May 23 at 7pm

Learn how to change margins, fonts, and borders in this beginner's class. Feel free to bring your laptop and all of your questions.

In addition to classes, the Nevins Library hosts free basic tech help at 2:00 and 2:30 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and at 4:00 and 4:30 on Thursdays. Let us teach you how to operate your device!
