Description:

Adlerian therapy is a phenomenological approach to therapy, based on a belief in the individual’s perception of reality and is often called Individual Psychology. Adlerian play therapy is based on Adlerian therapy which postulates that behavior is purposeful and occurs in a social context. It is believed that misbehavior occurs when children become discouraged. Adlerian Play therapy helps children and caregivers gain insight into the authentic reasons for misbehavior. Through play therapy children are free to explore, create and use the therapeutic powers of play to heal and let go of misbehaviors.

Objectives:

  • Identify the basic principles of Adlerian Therapy and how it applies to play therapy
  • Describe how clients may enhance their social interest, reduce feelings of inferiority, and make changes of their life goals
  • Identify the four mistaken goals for misbehavior and the crucial Cs as ways of helping children deal with discouragement
  • Describe the four stages of Adlerian Play Therapy and how to skillfully transition through the phases in a directive way
  • Demonstrate application of Adlerian Play Therapy skills of using the miracle question, early memories, Act as if, use of encouragement and spit in the soup techniques
