The Footsteps of Jesus’ 12 Apostles
|
During our Wonders of Italy Tour, we visited the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. Founded in 324, it is the oldest public church in the city of Rome, and the oldest basilica of the Western world. It also serves as the cathedral church for the Pope, which oddly, makes it more important than St. Peter’s Basilica. Regrettably, the ancient church was allowed to deteriorate and was rebuilt in the late1600’s. Many of the relics were retained, but the ancient design of standing pillars was replaced by solid walls with niches for statues. Statues of Jesus’ 12 apostles were commissioned to fill these niches. Our group spent a significant amount of time studying the statues. Everyone had questions about the symbols and their stories.
|
The history of Jesus’ apostles can be confusing. There are four passages in the Bible listing the names of all twelve, but not all of the apostles play significant roles in scripture. Some of the apostles have stories surrounding them. Others speak and ask questions, while others are only mentioned in the lists of apostles. A few of the apostles are known by multiple names, which can make these lists and other references to them confusing. In some cases, the apostles with common names have been mistakenly identified with other biblical figures who had the same name. The symbols surrounding them can be equally confusing.
Much of what we “know” about the apostles comes from church tradition. Unfortunately, tradition often embraced legends alongside facts, and it can be difficult to discern details about where the apostles went, what they did, and how they died without embracing the legends. This is especially true for the more obscure apostles.
This summer I would like to explore the lives of the 12 apostles focusing on what is written in the Bible and in the legends. Surprisingly, Lutherans have accepted commemoration of the apostles’ lives for 500 years and continue to use the readings and prayers appointed for the day. As Martin Luther wrote, “Next to Holy Scripture there certainly is no more useful book for Christendom than that of the lives of the saints.” So, join us in worship each Sunday this summer as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus’ 12 apostles.
Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

On Sunday, May 21st, Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church celebrated office manager Linda Nelson’s June retirement and her 11 + years of service. When the announcement of Linda’s retirement first became known, I had someone ask how the Church Council would find three people to replace her. It is not an exaggeration. Linda has been the voice of the church and first responder to countless visitors. Of course, that is only the first part of her job description. Linda has also served as our financial secretary and accountant. Did I mention that she organizes the volunteers who lead Sunday morning worship, as well as the coffee servers? She is active in nearly every aspect of our congregational life. Personally, I am grateful for the work Linda has done, for her friendship, her organizational skills and her willingness to take on new projects and challenges. Yes, it will be hard to find three people to take her place.
With that said, I am very pleased to announce that Diane LaMere has accepted the invitation and challenge of following Linda as the new office manager. Diane is no stranger to the congregation or to the work that Linda has been doing. Diane is truly a gifted church worker. I first knew her when we were colleagues at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Excelsior where she was responsible for leading contemporary worship. From there she went on to be the Director of Children’s Ministries at Mt. Calvary in Excelsior with an enrollment of 400 students. 10 years ago, I invited her to lunch to discuss whether she would be interested in making the Sunday School floor more inviting and child friendly. Little did I know that she had a BBA in Accounting from the University of Iowa. She will continue Linda’s work schedule of three days in the office each week, and work from home in preparation for the Sunday School program. We are all excited about this transition.
Linda will remain active in the life of Lake of the Isles, so you will see her regularly. And Diane will continue to be the face of the church for our Sunday School families. Thank you to both Linda and Diane for your service.

Linda's Celebration Sunday
|
|
|
A wonderful time was had by all! The Fellowship Hall was full of people and joy on Sunday, May 21st.
We celebrated Linda's 11 1/2 years of service at LOTI in a special Celebration Coffee Hour with a Norwegian theme, as we were also marking Norwegian National Day. We had lefse, kransekake, lingonberries, Norwegian almond kringle, Norwegian salmon with dill sauce, Norwegian meatballs with gravy, Jarlsburg, Gjetost, knekkebrød, Norwegian waffles and of course, lots of herring.
The Council gifted Linda $1100, $100 for each year of service. Staff presented her with a Corinthian Wind Chime in the key of A, along with a "retirement bag" to carry her multiple cards and gifts. An original floral painting was presented to Linda by Don Holzschuh.

We will miss Linda in the office, but she promises to continue to be with us…as an active member of the congregation. Best Wishes & God's Blessings to her in retirement.
