Description:
Social anxiety in children is among the four most common forms of anxiety. Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. Too much stress becomes distress and opens the door to Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs) and ultimately Panic Attacks, and various forms of anxiety disorders that are often seen in play therapy. This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of anxiety and demonstrate cognitive behavior and directive play therapy interventions for children and adolescents. Play, art and case scenarios will be part of this learning experience.
Objectives:
- State the diagnostic criteria for Social Anxiety
- Identify the tenets of CBT as described by Aaron Beck, MD and examples of how to integrate CBT with play therapy
- Demonstrate a treatment model for anxiety in children using CBT and Directive Play Therapy interventions
- Identify key principles to teach parents of an anxious child
- Demonstrate at least 3 directive play therapy strategies for anxiety
- Identify bibliotherapy resurces to deal with anxiety in children

Sonia Hinds, APRN, CNS, RPT-S™ is the Founder and CEO of Chesapeake Beach Professional Seminars. Founder and Executive Director of Barstow Acres Children’s Center, a non-profit practice providing children's mental health services. Ms. Hinds is trained in Child-Centered and Gestalt play therapy with Violet Oaklander (retired). Authored chapter, Play Therapy with African-American Village in text, Cultural Issues in Play Therapy, edited by Eliana Gil, PhD, RPT-S and Athena Drewes, PsyD, RPT-S. Ms. Hinds received the MD/DC APT 2019 Outstanding Service Award.
