News

May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month in many countries, including the United States. During this time, people come together to talk about mental health, reduce the shame associated with it, and offer support to those who need it. There are events and campaigns that aim to teach everyone about mental health and make it easier for people to get help if they need it. So, May is a special time to focus on taking care of our minds and helping others do the same.

Do You Know?

No Sponsorship Needed: Internships and Jobs for F-1 Visa Students

F-1 visa students can often secure internships or entry-level jobs without requiring immediate visa sponsorship. This means that these opportunities may fall under programs like Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allow F-1 students to work in the U.S. during or after their studies without needing additional sponsorship right away.

If the application asks, "Do you need sponsorship?" the answer is "No."

If the application asks, "Do you require future sponsorship?" the answer is "Yes."

You will need to inform your employer that you can work for one year on OPT and then apply for a STEM extension for two years. This extension is a benefit provided by the student visa and does not require sponsorship.

OPT Update: Fee Increase

Effective April 1, 2024, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will increase certain immigration and naturalization benefit request fees. Most notably, the I-765 Application for Employment Authorization will increase from $410 to $470 for online filing applications. For paper-based I-765 applications, the fee will increase to $520. Students applying for OPT and STEM OPT are required to pay the I-765 fee with each OPT/STEM OPT application they submit to USCIS.

For a full list of fee increases, please visit the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website.
