A Note from Scott and Marsha
November 10, 2022
We are flipping spaces this week so be prepared when you return; it's going to be magical. I can just about smell the pine and hear the giggles of small children searching for the perfect Christmas tree! Only four more days...

This is our final "walk down memory lane" story. Next week, I have an amazing story to share because I pulled a prank of all pranks. This one might be my best work ever.

Back to the picture. If you have been up and down Hwy 751 (or in the area for any length of time), you have watched this area evolve. We added a pergola and covered space to shop, but the base was gravel and, well, it was just weird. So we added a deck and that was a huge improvement. Then we enclosed it some to provide protection from the sun. Another improvement. Then we went all out and built an addition onto the house. Now it's magical!
This is the deck and right now we have it cleared to flip for winter. All our tropical plants are being tucked inside for safety and we are getting ready to adjust this space. I'm always excited to see what our team does; it changes from season to season.

The picture below? This was pre-everything. This was affectionately known as "The Little White House on 751."
This is how most conversations over the last 12 years have gone: "What brought you in today?" we inquire.

"I'm browsing for some plants. I never stopped here before. I have driven by hundreds of times and I thought you were just a little white house on 751. I had no idea this was all here!" they exclaim.

So the challenge from Scott was: how do we help people find out who we are, learn that we are more than our little white house, and bring in more foot traffic? Nodding my head, "You build big stuff." So we did. For three years straight, I have built stuff with my two friends, Kevin and Ben. Forget our topography is sometimes impossible, trees are everywhere, and we are basically gravel and grade (as Robert says.) Figure it out and away we go.

And that pretty much sums it up. We tweak and tinker, change a few things, add some new ideas from an amazing team, and throw in all things green. Ta-da! Magical, simply magical. And how did this happen? All because a kind-hearted elderly lady and owner, Mrs. Davis, and her dog, Max, liked Scott when he sat down at her kitchen table for his interview. Many evenings for years later (over wine) we would listen to her reminisce and share her life stories. We will always be grateful for her friendship, care, and guidance. Little did she realize what her belief and encouragement would do for us personally and what her "hobby" called For Garden's Sake would grow into! We love sharing it with you.

GARDEN CENTER FEATURES
TERRARIUM PLANTS
These tiny terrarium plants are absolutely adorable! They make excellent gifts, especially if you pair them with a mini pot. You can also plant them in terrariums to create a mini forestscape in your home! Some people like to start with a small terrarium plant and see how large it can grow.

You'll need to make sure they get enough water and humidity to thrive. If you're keeping them in mini pots, check them daily or every other day to make sure the soil isn't too dry. Place them in more humid areas of your home, such as bathrooms or the kitchen, where they'll get enough warmth and humidity. Watering needs will be a bit different if you plant them in a terrarium. If your terrarium container has light condensation on the sides, it's perfect!
EVERGREEN PERENNIALS

Evergreen Perennials are excellent for a few reasons. They stay green all year round, making your planters and garden beds look amazing! They come in various shades, textures, and sizes, so you can find exactly what you need to achieve the look you're going for. Want to build a winter planter to keep color on your porch? We'd love to help you pick out some options!
COASTAL LEUCOTHOE

This colorful evergreen shrub is resistant to deer and rabbits and provides an important spring nectar source for native pollinators. Coastal Leucothoe does require consistant moisture, so make sure to check on the soil frequently. Otherwise, this shrub is considered low-maintenance. It does best in shade, so if you have some pine trees on your property, you can plant it alongside those!

The leaves stay on all year round and change colors; during the summer they are deep green and fade to purple and bronze in autumn. It also produces white flowers in spring! Please note it is toxic to humans and pets.

If you're pulling out the Christmas decorations this weekend, take a few minutes while you rearrange to check your houseplants, give them a dusting, and sing a litle Christmas song to them. We know they'll appreciate it!
