Reuters: Polly Trottenberg Reported to be Named Interim FAA Administrator
|
On Sunday, June 4, Reuters reported that Deputy U.S. Transportation Secretary Polly Trottenberg is expected to be named the Federal Aviation Administration's next interim leader, according to two sources, but the sources cautioned that appointment wasn’t final and could change. The Wall Street Journal first reported the news.
Trottenberg has previously served as New York City’s Transportation Commissioner, as senior USDOT policy official under President Barack Obama and as an aide in the U.S. Senate to Senator Charles Schumer. President Joe Biden has not yet named a new nominee to lead the agency after Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington withdrew his nomination last March. According to Reuters, Acting FAA Administrator Billy Nolen is expected to leave the agency on Friday, June 9. More...

Worldwide Avionics Sales Top $777 Million in First Quarter
|
The Aircraft Electronics Association released its first-quarter 2023 Avionics Market Report. In the first three months of the year, total worldwide business and general aviation avionics sales amounted to $777,640,387.48, or more than $777 million as reported by the participating companies. The figure represented a 22.6% increase in total sales compared to the first-quarter 2022 amount of $634,546,020.43, or more than $634 million. This increase was driven by a 32.1% increase in forward-fit sales compared to the same time frame one year ago.
However, first-quarter sales decreased 2.1% sequentially from the fourth quarter of 2022, snapping a streak of 10 consecutive quarters of increasing sales. Of the more than $777 million in first-quarter 2023 sales, 39.9% came from the retrofit market (avionics equipment installed after original production), while forward-fit sales (avionics equipment installed by airframe manufacturers during original production) amounted to 60.1% of first-quarter sales. Ask the Industry
As an owner or manager of an avionics shop, do you send your technicians to conventions and trade shows other than the AEA Convention and AEA Regionals?
|
|
According to Charles Schefer at Delta Fox Aviation (DeltaFox) in northern Virginia, aircraft owners have the mistaken impression that all avionics installation projects are created equal and meet the same high-quality standards. Price doesn’t matter, and it’s all the same good work. Schefer knows from experience this is not the case. He has experienced the difference at times when he writes a proposal for a prospective customer who then goes elsewhere to have the work done by the lowest bidder.
Schefer supports the idea of customers getting multiple quotes for a project but warns prospective clients not to confuse lowest price with best value. He sometimes loses out to other shops that simply charge less. Unfortunately, in the realm of avionics installations, the old adage “you get what you pay for” truly applies. More...

Specialty Avionics Springs from Accidental Business
|
Growing up amid financial hardship has influenced virtually every decision in
Brad Kratz’s life, including how he started his aircraft maintenance and avionics business and flight school. A storyteller at heart, Kratz effortlessly weaves that experience into everyday conversations.
“I came from very humble beginnings,” said Kratz, founder of Specialty Avionics and Innovative Aviation flight school at Indiana County Airport, also known as Jimmy Stewart Field. “We had almost nothing materially growing up, but I had great parents and family that loved us. In the summer, we would visit my grandfather, who lived a five- or six-hour drive from us, which was a big deal 50 years ago. He would take me for ice cream, and we always ended up at the Allentown Airport sitting on a picnic table watching the airplanes take off. I was fascinated.” More...

Forward-Looking AEA Convention a Success
|
Product innovation and professional development were in focus at the 66th annual AEA International Convention & Trade Show, where aircraft electronics manufacturers, distributors, technicians, and business leaders gathered to network and learn about the latest avionics technology designed to power safer and more efficient flight in the general aviation industry.
“This year’s AEA Convention demonstrates the strength of our avionics community and shows that our future is bright,” said AEA President and CEO Mike Adamson. “As general aviation aircraft shipments are increasing and demand for qualified talent remains high, we’re delivering the tools to help companies meet their sales and staffing challenges and support the next generation of aircraft electronics technicians.”
Held April 24-27 at the Gaylord Palms Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, the event provided a vibrant marketplace for 1,612 attendees to review the products and services of 130 exhibiting companies representing 18 countries worldwide – all increases over the 2022 show – as well as opportunities for manufacturers to interact with their dealers. Additionally, 33 companies announced new avionics products during AEA’s well-attended New Product Introductions showcase, including connectivity solutions, aircraft management tools, touchscreen displays, lithium-ion batteries, LED lighting, and more. If you know Conroy, you’ll likely agree that this is a well-deserved recognition of a long career built on doing what we all strive to do: Deliver great services and products to help customers fly safer. 2022 GA and Part 135 Activity Survey Due July 14
FAA survey measures safety, determines funding, and informs the impact of aviation on the economy
|
The Federal Aviation Administration’s 45th annual General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey is taking place, reporting on calendar year 2022. The deadline for completing surveys is July 14. The GA Survey is the only source of information on the general aviation fleet, the number of hours flown, and the ways people use general aviation aircraft.
Data from this survey are used by governmental agencies and industry to:
- Compute safety metrics, such as fatal accidents rates.
- Understand the impact of the GA industry on jobs, economic output, and investments in aviation infrastructure.
- Track the success of safety initiatives, including avionics recommendations.
- Determine funding for infrastructure and service needs.
- Assess the impact of regulatory changes.
The FAA and industry need accurate data on a broad range of aircraft. Participation is voluntary, and everyone who is contacted is encouraged to respond to the survey so that all aviation activity is represented. If you have questions, contact Tetra Tech at 800-826-1797 or email infoaviationsurvey@tetratech.com.
