ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fall news. The sermon series (seven of them) will center on Mike Graves' book Jesus' Vision for Your One Wild and Precious Life (on things like Poverty, Hunger, Polarization, Inclusion, and More). There will be copies available in the library too. But right now, I need someone to help coordinate/organize small discussion groups about this book.

Racial Justice Team Update on the 2021 Housing Donation Drive

In December 2021, the Racial Justice Team partnered with the International Institute to organize a Housing Donation Drive to support a newly arrived family from Afghanistan. The Judson congregation was invited to donate new and/or used household items that to set up the new family in a home the International Institute had secured for the family in the Whittier Neighborhood. Judson came through with amazing generosity with dishes, bedding, cookware, cleaning supplies, and more. A group of Racial Justice team members took the supplies to the apartment and set things up to welcome the family to their new home.

Last week, Cory Ertz, the director of the program, reached out with an update on the family, and we thought the Judson community would like to hear how things are going. Thanks again to everyone who supported this family with your donations, time, and energy. It was a great example of our hospitality/social justice core values in action.

Choir to Startup Again – Do you enjoy singing? Judson Choir is looking for people to join us. No long-term commitment is required. We sing a variety of music. All ages are welcome. The music director is Dr. John De Haan, a voice teacher at the University of Minnesota. We practice on Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 pm. Enter through the big black door on Harriet Ave. Whether you are looking to enhance your vocal abilities or simply enjoy the act of singing, the Judson Choir offers a fulfilling and enjoyable experience for all involved.

Children & Youth News: The August theme for the Children's Program is Creation Stories. Carolyn chooses a story for each Sunday based on the monthly theme and looks for books that represent a variety of cultures, character building qualities, and mindfulness, and also encourages wonder & awe of nature and exploring questions about faith. After reading the story, Jessica asks "I wonder" questions and then does a related activity or craft.

The June/July theme was Light. The children heard stories about the Indian festival of lights (and got to reminisce about Shefali and her children), fireflies, the inner light of self-confidence, the Chinese American immigrant experience, and "when God made light." If you haven't been to the Rainbow lately, you might want to check it out and see all the fun creations Jessica and the kids have come up with!

Now that you know the theme, you can ask the children what they think about it. (Just in case you find yourself needing a kid-conversation extender beyond "How's your summer going?" 😉) Questions? Ask Carolyn at ckolovitz@judsonchurch.org.
