Dear Susan,

On July 27th, I attended an event celebrating the completion of the first phase of improvements to Maxwell Farms Regional Park in Sonoma. In my remarks, I was thrilled to highlight one of the inspirations for the renovations - Nikita Ducarroz, a Glen Ellen BMX athlete who won a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and competed in this summer's Olympics in Paris. One of my first meetings as Supervisor, over ten years ago, was with Nikita's mother, who expressed their desire to put in a pump track at Maxwell Farms to serve as a safe space for kids like Nikita to develop their skills and just have fun. The pump track is coming in phase two of the improvements, but regardless, I hope the upgrades to Maxwell Farms and the Olympics are inspiring you to get out and get active in our wonderful Regional Parks this summer!

Maxwell Farms Regional Park - Construction is complete on a series of new improvements at Maxwell Farms Regional Park, a favorite destination for families and local sports leagues in the Boyes Hot Springs area near Sonoma. Sonoma County Regional Parks has successfully completed the first phase of the park’s renovation, introducing new sports fields, improved parking and enhanced ADA access and amenities to boost recreational opportunities at this central community park.

This first phase of updates at the 82-acre park are part of a master plan aimed at creating more access to high-quality sports facilities, improving safety and accessibility, and enhancing the overall park experience for all visitors. The updates include all-weather sports fields for baseball, soccer and lacrosse, ensuring year-round playability for local sports leagues; new restroom buildings, which offer the potential for future concession operations; expanded parking with more ADA-accessible spaces and new EV charging stations. Visitors of all abilities can now access the sports fields, playground, picnic areas and fan seating via new ADA-accessible pathways.

SoCoAdapts - As this year’s fire season is ramping up, we urge residents to take advantage of free home hardening and defensible space assessments through the Wildfire Adapted Sonoma County project (SoCo Adapts). Defensible Space Assessments will help you understand how to reduce vegetation risks. A Home Hardening Assessment will show you how you can reduce wildfire vulnerabilities to the home itself. During an assessment, expert staff identify wildfire vulnerabilities and recommend actions residents can take to harden their home or improve defensible space. These free SoCo Adapts assessments are to help residents understand how to make our homes and communities more resilient to wildfire and are not for code compliance.

Only 200 free Home Assessments remain, so sign up now at SoCoAdapts.com.
