Trinity Sunday

Trinity Sunday is the Sunday that each year follows the Day of Pentecost and the giving of the Holy Spirit. It is on this day that the church celebrates the mystery of God as Three in One: one God who is Creator, Redeemer, and Comforter.

Baccalaureate Sunday

This Sunday is also Baccalaureate Sunday at Fourth Church, a day when we recognize and congratulate Fourth Church members and Chicago Lights Tutoring students who are graduating in 2023.

The Lord’s Supper

This Sunday we celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Those who are worshiping with us from home are encouraged to have bread and juice on hand so might share in this meal together, wherever we are.

Children in Worship

Children are always welcome in worship! During the service nursery care is also available, and Summer Sunday School meets at 10:00 a.m. as well.

Next Sunday, June 11 we will welcome as our guest preacher Mx. Slats Toole, a writer, educator, preacher, and theater director/sound designer based in Minneapolis. They hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and a Master of Divinity and Certificate in Theology, Women, and Gender from Princeton Theological Seminary.

They currently serve as co-moderator of the board of the Covenant Network of Presbyterians. Slats is also a published author and has led workshops on expansive language and queer theology (with a particular emphasis on gender identity) throughout the United States and Canada. Slats’ work centers around creating space in the church where all are welcomed, embraced, and loved.

We look forward to them preaching at Fourth Church on June 11!

The Covenant Network, of which Slats Toole is co-moderator, works for an equity still not fully realized for LGBTQIA+ people in church and society.

Fourth Church has had a consistent presence on the Covenant Network board—on which Senior Associate Pastor Lucy Forster-Smith currently serves—since John M. Buchanan was one of the founding co-moderators of the group in 1997.

Our work on the Fourth Church Member Census continues, with the most recent batch of Member Census forms mailed to member homes in late May.

If you receive one in the coming days, please take a few moments to complete the Census form and return it to the church by June 15.

Your doing so will help in our effort to paint the picture of who Fourth Church is today and provide information that will help us strengthen connections in our community.

The Interim Pastor Nominating Committee (IPNC), which has responsibility for identifying and recommending an Interim Pastor candidate, is hard at work.

Serving on this committee are Mark Hurley, Chair; Jared Light; Sally Scott; Gretchen Van Natta; and Jessica Wang.

The first step in their work has been to finalize and submit a Ministry Information Form — the job description that provides background about Fourth Church and details what we are seeking in an Interim Pastor. This is an important tool in searching for and having conversations with candidates for this interim role of guiding us during the year or more when we are searching for the next Pastor.

If you have questions or comments about this process or the transition, please email them to transition@fourthchurch.org
