Message from the Community Engagement Team

Summer is in full swing, and we are excited to share the amazing work we've been doing and our plans for the upcoming weeks!


Over the past couple of weeks, we've been actively participating in the Summer Night Lights (SNL) program at Nickerson Gardens. This initiative has allowed us to engage with the community, offering health education and youth development activities that have been both fun and informative. From interactive workshops to engaging activities, we've seen incredible enthusiasm and participation from the youth in Nickerson Gardens.

Nutrition and Wellness in Our Community

This month, we're taking a step back from providing recipes to focus on something even more essential: the importance of nutrition and healthy eating within the Black/African American community. Choosing nutritious foods and promoting healthy eating practices can combat chronic diseases, improve mental health, celebrate cultural heritage, and strengthen communities.

Why Nutritional Foods Matter:


Chronic Disease Prevention: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help manage and prevent conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease by providing essential nutrients.


Mental Health Benefits: Diets high in processed foods and sugars are linked to depression and anxiety. Balanced diets with omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants improve mood and cognitive function. Read more.


Cultural Heritage: Embracing traditional African and African American cuisines featuring ingredients like leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and beans promotes health and honors cultural heritage. Healthy preparation methods, like grilling instead of frying, enhance these benefits.


Community Well-being: Healthy eating can strengthen community bonds through activities like community gardens, farmer's markets, and cooking classes, providing access to fresh produce and promoting collective well-being.


Practical Steps for Eating Healthy:


Eat Whole Foods: Fill your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains like quinoa and brown rice, and lean proteins such as chicken, fish, and beans.


Limit Processed Foods: Reduce intake of foods high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium. Opt for homemade meals over fast food.


Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary drinks and sodas.


Educate and Advocate: Learn about the benefits of healthy eating and advocate for better access to nutritious foods in schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods.
