The New Brunswick Cattle Producers issue a monthly update to all members each month. This is comprised of industry news and updates, upcoming events, upcoming sales and relevant articles.

E-Transfer Payments to NBCP Update

Any payments, such as levy remittance, to the NBCP via e-transfer shall now be made to nbcattle@agricommodity.ca.

On-Farm Climate Action Fund

New Brunswick Soil and Crop Improvement Association is now accepting applications for the On-Farm Climate Action Fund for the 2023-2024 crop year. The objective of the On-Farm Climate Action Fund is to support farmers in adopting beneficial management practices that store carbon and reduce greenhouse gases, specifically in the areas of:


1. nitrogen management

2. cover cropping

3. rotational grazing practices

AGRICULTURAL CLEAN TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM - ADOPTION STREAM (ACT-A)

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is re-opening the Agricultural Clean Technology (ACT) Adoption stream program. This program was in high demand the last time it opened. This time, applications will be accepted from June 1, 2023, until June 22, 2023, at 12:00pm (Eastern Time) or until demand exceeds available funding or otherwise announced. are encouraged to apply immediately. Organizations that have received Adoption Stream funding in the past are not eligible to apply for this new funding opportunity.

All projects must be completed by March 31, 2026.


The ACT-A Program aims to support the adoption (purchase and installation) of commercially available clean technologies that will prioritize investments that generate measurable greenhouse gas (GHG), fertilizer, and methane reductions in line with the Government of Canada targets.

NB Power Rate Design

The New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board is holding Public Forums to give ratepayers an opportunity to comment on NB Power’s Rate Design application. The Application and supporting documents may be viewed on the Board’s website at www.nbeub.ca as Matter No. 529.

LEVY UPDATE

Please be advised that the Check-Off payable by Quebec sellers has been updated for all classes of cattle. As such, purchasers and dealers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are required to deduct and remit amended levies on cull cows, fed cattle, and bob calves sold by Quebec sellers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

 

For cattle from Quebec sellers, all rates are as follows:


Class of Cattle/Rate

Cull Cows/$16.05

Fed Cattle/$10.05

Bob Calves/$5.50


Please update your systems and records to reflect this increase and begin deducting and remitting the new rate for Quebec cattle effective January 1, 2023.

AgriNB Launches New Brunswick’s new agricultural job bank

AgriNB is pleased to introduce our newly developed job bank, a comprehensive resource for connecting agricultural employers with job seekers in the New Brunswick region. This platform offers the added convenience of allowing employers to advertise job openings at no cost, thus promoting employment opportunities within the agricultural industry and working towards bridging the labour shortage gap. We encourage both employers seeking qualified candidates and job seekers looking for new opportunities to utilize the AgriNB job bank as a valuable resource.

Regulations Amending the Health of Animals Regulations (Identification and Traceability)

Comment period will close on June 16, 2023



The Government of Canada has launched a new online commenting system in CG I that permits stakeholders to comment on proposed regulations online during the consultation period. All stakeholder comments that conform to government guidelines will be posted online after the comment period ends. Making stakeholders’ comments on proposed regulations publicly available will increase transparency and accountability, generating a better understanding of the regulatory concerns and challenges of Canadians and stakeholders, and has the potential to facilitate important discussions between regulators and stakeholders. The online commenting feature has been designed to be easy to use and we strongly encourage you to use it to submit your comments on the upcoming proposed amendments to Part XV Health of Animals Regulations (Identification and Traceability).

The Canadian Beef Check-Off Agency established a scholarship to encourage and support students pursuing post-secondary studies in the field of agriculture, agricultural research, or with an agriculture background pursuing studies in marketing.


One scholarship of $2000 is available annually.

NEW! Mandatory Vaccination of Breeding Herds With Fetal Protection

August 1st, 2023

  • The regulatory changes concerning the requirement to vaccinate breeding herds with fetal protection for feeder calves sold at specialized auctions starting on August 1, 2023, have been approved by the Régie des marchés agricoles et alimentaires du Québec and published in the Gazette officielle du Québec.
  • Be sure to contact your veterinarian promptly in order to include, upgrade, or continue the vaccination of your breeding herd with fetal protection.

New Brunswick programming for the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership have launched!



*As stated in the SCAP Administrative Guidelines, the Canada / New Brunswick Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable-CAP) policy framework is a five-year federal, provincial, and territorial Initiative which will operate from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2028, unless otherwise announced. Program applications are welcome on an ongoing basis until funding is exhausted. Please check your desired program's administrative guidelines for full details.

Enabling Agricultural Research and Innovation

Applicants are eligible for funding assistance for approved activities intended to encourage the growth, profitability, sustainability and self-sufficiency of New Brunswick’s agriculture, agri-food, agri-product, and agri-science sectors through innovative research and development projects; onfarm demonstration trials; pre-commercialization development activities; on-farm innovation; and adoption of new technologies that have a regional or local impact; and adoption of practices and technologies that will support climate change adaptation and mitigation, including reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improving carbon sequestration, and related technology transfer activities. The Market Development and Access program elements aim to increase the sales of New Brunswick’s food basket by supporting industry efforts to access and take advantage of new, existing, and emerging market opportunities, from local farmers’ markets to international markets. Agri-Land Accessibility and Enhancement

Support the development of farmland for agriculture in New Brunswick, including bringing lands formerly used for agriculture back into active production, enhancing the development and productivity of new production fields and improving existing farmland. Any increase in acreage will support more sustainable farming practices with reduced environmental impacts, improved crop rotations resulting in healthier soils, increased land base for the production of crops and livestock feed, and increased self-sufficiency levels of food and livestock feed crops which will reduce transportation costs and associated environmental impacts. Risk Management and Food Safety

Accelerate the adoption of recognized assurance systems, including food safety, biosecurity, traceability, and animal welfare in the production, processing, and distribution of New Brunswick agri-food products.   • The New Brunswick Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture, and Fisheries through its Veterinary Service is supporting Producers and CFIA in the on-going survellienvce of Bovine Spongioform Encephalopathy. Elligible samples can recieve reimbursement up to $150.00.
