POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Maple Shade Police Department will be starting

this year off with a lot of community engagement.

COCOA WITH A COP

On February 7th, officers will host a, "Cocoa With a Cop" event for junior high and high school students at Maple Shade High School. This will be the third year for this event. The officers supply hot chocolate, orange juice and a light breakfast for any student that would like to stop in prior to the school day and socialize with officers of all ranks. This event is always well attended.

PIZZA WITH PATROLS

On February 13th from 12PM - 2PM, the Maple Shade Police Department will host, “Pizza With Patrols”, at Crust N’ Fire at 112 W. Main Street. This event is held during the work day to offer the opportunity to our seniors and very, young population to come out and enjoy a warm lunch with our officers. We are also hoping to draw some workers in during their lunch break.  Pizza and beverages will be served courtesy of the Maple Shade Police Department.

CARRABBA'S CARES

On February 25th, Carrabba's Italian Grill will host the "Carrabba's Cares" event to support a very, integral extension of the Maple Shade Police Department. The fundraising will be held from 11AM - 10PM and 15% of the total of your check will go directly to the Maple Shade Police Chaplain’s Association.

The MSPCA is a proud sponsor of National Night Out. They handle the juvenile diversion program which keeps young offenders out of the Juvenile Justice System. They also support our community and our officers during difficult times and guide them through traumatic events. Your support is appreciated!

MEET CORPORAL ROBERT BENNETT

It is not often that the public is given the opportunity to get to know our officers on a personal level. We would like the community to know that our personnel are much more than just men and women in uniforms. This month we shed some light on Corporal Robert Bennett, in our Officer Spotlight.

Corporal Robert Bennett, a born and raised Shader, grew up on the north side of town with seven siblings. He attended Maple Shade High School where he wrestled, played football, and participated in track events. Corporal Bennett graduated high school in 1986 and went on to wrestle in college for a couple years.

After college, he worked in construction for several years before finding himself interested in law enforcement and attending the Burlington County Police Academy.

Hired by the Maple Shade Police Department in 2001, Corporal Bennett had no idea where his law enforcement career would take him.

After spending 6 years in the patrol division, Corporal Bennett was assigned to the Detective Bureau, as the juvenile detective.  In 2012, he left the Detective Bureau to become a street supervisor. In 2021, because of his experience with juveniles and Juvenile Justice System, Corporal Bennett was asked to fill the role of School Resource Officer (SRO) which still his current assignment. As the SRO, Corporal Bennett oversees 4 officers who are assigned full-time to each school in our district.

Corporal Bennett enjoys spending time with his family. He has been married to his beautiful wife, Carmella, for 31 years. They also raised their family right here in Maple Shade. He has 4 adult children and 5 grandsons. His favorite past time is being with them. He also enjoys boating and woodworking. Corporal Bennett can make furniture and more recently has taken an interest in bowl lathing where he makes bowls out of wood.

When asked about his favorite vacation spot, Corporal Bennett can’t really decide between Key West, Florida and Carova Beach, North Carolina.

Corporal Bennett recently went on a trip to Italy that solidified his love of Italian food. He has never met an Italian dish he didn’t love.

Our favorite, fun fact about Corporal Bennett, aside from the fact that he can fix just about anything, is that he can sew!

If you see Corporal Bennett out and about, please take a minute to say “hello” and ask him for one of his trading cards.

PUBLIC SAFETY REMINDER

The Maple Shade Police Department would like to remind you

to remove all ice and snow from your vehicle before driving.

WATER & SEWER UTILITIES

FIRE HYDRANTS - PUBLIC EDUCATION

The Township’s fire hydrants are mandated to be maintained, flushed, and inspected annually by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

To ensure optimal water quality for Maple Shade, the utility schedules and completes this requirement twice per year. To minimize the impact of water quality to the residents and businesses, the utility flushes the hydrants during the overnight hours. The hydrants are flushed between the hours of 10PM - 6AM in April and October. The operators of the utility shift their hours to complete this. If you are not awake during these hours, you may never see anyone working on the Township’s fire hydrants.

The hydrants are flushed until the water runs clear. After the flushing is completed, an inspection occurs. The inspection consists of several physical and visible observations. If the hydrant is inoperable, the hydrant is placed out-of-service with a bag and ring. The utility informs the Fire Department and the management of the utility coordinates repairs. Out-of-service fire hydrants are repaired or replaced as soon as possible. The fire hydrants in our region are “dry barrel” hydrants, which means the hydrants do not hold any water until the main valve is opened. After each use, the hydrant assembly drains underground. This is checked as part of the inspection during each flushing event. This ensures the hydrants don’t hold water and freeze in the winter.

During a fire, it is not uncommon for multiple hydrants to be used within the vicinity of the fire. This ensures adequate volume when multiple fire departments respond.

Fire hydrants are also flushed after a water main break is repaired. This ensures sediment is flushed from the water mains and fresh water is brought into the affected area.

The only individuals authorized to operate a fire hydrant are the utility operators and the fire department. If you witness illegal operation, please contact the utility or the police department.

WATER UPDATE

Water System Improvements on Alexander Avenue, between Route 38 and W. Rudderow, will be completed in February. The water system improvements on Rose Avenue, from W. Woodcrest Avenue to S. Coles Avenue, is scheduled to begin after the Alexander Ave project is completed. Please use caution around these areas during those times.

The Spring hydrant flushing is scheduled for April 2025. Notice will be given in March when scheduling occurs.

SEWER UPATE

The first phase of the Main Street Pump Station’s force main replacement project is ongoing. The project is scheduled to be completed in February.

WATER SERVICE LINE INVENTORY UPDATE

Per NJDEP regulations, all water systems must identify the water service lines that supply water to residential and commercial buildings. In 2022, the Township sent out 2 rounds of letters asking those with unknown lines to contact the utility to make an appointment. At that time the unknown lines total was over 500, our inventory currently stands at 158.

We need your help to complete the inventory. If you received a letter in November, please contact the utility to set up an appointment. The appointment takes just a few minutes, otherwise an excavation may be required to determine the service line material. The current inventory can be viewed HERE.
