This Sunday is the Feast of Pentecost, when the church is empowered for and propelled out into mission. Ironically, it is also the Sunday when we celebrate the conclusion of another “program year” for several of our ministries, and celebrate that conclusion with the parish picnic immediately after the 11:00 service. Most obviously, our choirs and children’s formation programs take a break from their regular schedules after this week. We’ll express our deep appreciation for these ministries at 11:00 on Sunday.
Our program calendar works this way for practical, rather than theological reasons. But there is still a theological point to make. Of course we don’t stop our ministry with children or stop our mission-making over the summer. These faithful Christians who have specialized in these ministries take a kind of break for most of a couple of months, which invites all of us to continue that joyful work in a different way. Over the summer, we all take a part in a different form of these essential ministries. And that is very much in the spirit (haha) of Pentecost.
God calls us all, together, into mission and gives us what we need for that mission. These breaks from some of specialist ministers invite us all into reflecting on our own unique array of gifts and how the being and work of the church relies on all of us.
Thanks be to God for the leaders of our ministry with children and youth and for the faithful artists who lead us in song. Thanks be to God for the gifts we have all been given for faithful living, and this good place from which to deploy them.

P.S. Pentecost is one of the few days when the church encourages adults to come in costume: wear red! And see below for how to contribute to the mostly-potluck parish picnic.

AN INVITATION TO THE GEORGIA 200 FUND | |
Here's a quick video introducing the Georgia 200 Fund.
We think you'll recognize a few folks.
|
The Georgia 200 Fund has been created by leaders from the three founding parishes of the Diocese of Georgia - Christ Church, Savannah, Christ Church, Frederica, and Saint Paul's, Augusta - to raise funds to cover the cost of comprehensive strategic planning for the Diocese of Georgia. 200 years ago leaders from those three parishes had a vision to create the Diocese of Georgia. Now, as we look ahead to the next 200 years, those three parishes see the importance of our Bishop's call for a comprehensive strategic plan for the Diocese.
All parishes and Episcopalians in the Diocese of Georgia are invited to make a gift to the Georgia 200 Fund in support of this important work. This invitation is not coming from the Bishop or Diocesan leadership bodies; it is not a capital campaign. The three original parishes in Georgia have come up with the idea for this fund and have made the first gifts to the fund in the hope that others will join them by making their own contributions - we are all in this together.
Gifts to the campaign may be sent by check to Saint Paul's with a notation for GA 200 Fund or online at our website: saintpauls.org/giving/. Choose fund: special offering, sub fund: Georgia 200.
Georgia 200 Fund contributions will only be used for the implementation of a Diocesan strategic plan. If any funds remain at the end of the process, those funds will be put towards initiatives the strategic plan might identify.
While the work to select a firm to do this work is ongoing, the anticipated cost of a comprehensive strategic plan from discovery to listening to completion could be as high as $50,000. This amount is not in our diocesan operating budget, nor is there a likely source of funding from current revenue streams. The three founding parishes have already pledged $35,000, combined, towards this effort and hope that others will help us reach the goal.
We have much to celebrate in our 200-year history as the Diocese of Georgia! The Georgia 200 Fund acknowledges that we have a bright future and that this strategic plan will help set the stage for the next 200 years of a faithful Episcopal presence in Georgia. Thank you for prayerfully considering support for the Georgia 200 Fund.

The Sunday Forum Series:
Being Salt and Light
Sundays, 9:30-10:30 AM, The Berlin Room
This is the last Sunday of Mother Kimberly's series: Salt and Light in our Sunday Forum, 9:30 AM.
What do the Holy Scriptures tell us about being salt and light? How can Christians add “seasoning” to a world that seems to already have its own flavor? How can Christians illuminate spaces that seem to embrace the status quo? How can a simple conversation and a way of being become a spark that ignites a positive exchange and leaves people wanting more? Let us walk together, share stories, and discover how our daily living can become liberating ways that will leave people wanting more.
