Summer may be a season of fun, but its leisure activities can also bring warm-weather hazards like allergic reactions, sunburns, drownings and outdoor accidents. SafeHome.com reports that more than 1 million children went to emergency rooms last June through August with summertime injuries.
Protect yourself, your home and your family by checking off these quick tasks for a safer summer:
☑️ Your First-Aid Kit
Stay prepared for minor accidents by making sure your first aid kit is well-stocked. Take a quick inventory and replenish any items that may be missing, like bandages, hydrocortisone cream, tweezers, antibiotic ointment, and sunburn relief lotion.
☑️ Your Grill
Before you fire it up, prepare your gas or charcoal grill for action. Thoroughly clean off any debris and food from your last cookout. Make sure the grill is placed at a safe distance from your home and foliage that can ignite and burn. Double-check for hose leaks if using a gas grill. Keep a fire extinguisher stored nearby.
☑️ Your Detectors
Ignoring your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors can have serious consequences. Confirm that batteries are still working, test each device according to factory instructions, and replace if needed.
☑️ Your Pool
Even kiddie pools with just a few inches of water can be a drowning hazard for toddlers. Be sure to drain yours when not in use – which will also eliminate a breeding ground for pests. For larger pools, consider installing a fence, locked safety gate, or alarm as an extra security measure to keep unsupervised children from entering. Install non-slip surfaces and keep safety devices like life preservers and flotation toys handy.
ServiSolutions wishes you a safe, healthy, and fun-filled summer!
