Eliza Bryant Village Adult Day Music & Memory
Monday | 9:30 am-11:30 am
Service participants in this activity will build relationships and explore memories with seniors in Adult Day through assisting residents with their personalized music playlist and/or talking about music. Additionally, volunteers will be asked to assist a Music Therapist with loading songs onto iTunes and completing listening logs. Transportation is provided!
YouthAbility Gardening
Monday | 9:45 am - 11:30 am

Service participants partner with developmentally challenged teens and young adults to garden in a horticulture club. The YouthAbility Ambassadors upkeep the gardens near the Jewish Community Center. Transportation is provided!
Esperanza Family ESL Class
Thursday | 4:55 pm-7:35 pm

Service participants must be proficient in Spanish in order to participate in this activity. JCU students will facilitate group lessons and teach English as a Second Language to families in Esperanza's Family Engagement Program. Participants should be comfortable communicating in Spanish and English (written, verbal, interpersonal). Transportation is provided!
Lake Erie Ink 6th Grade
Tuesday | 11:55 pm-2:30 pm

Service participants will assist 6th-grade students with creative writing activities during their English Language arts class. The workshops at Mary Bethune K-8 School in Cleveland will be taught by teaching artist Cynthia Larsen, Director of Education at Lake Erie Ink. The goal of the program is to foster creative expression and social-emotional learning, improve reading and writing, and build students' self-confidence as writers. Transportation is provided!
L'Arche Community
Monday | 4:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Service participants build relationships with adults with intellectual disabilities that are part of the L'Arche Community. L'Arche (A French word meaning "the ark" - as in Noah's ark) is an international faith community where people with and without disabilities share their lives together. Service participants will be sharing in everyday activities such as helping to clean, cooking supper, setting the table, doing laundry, going for a walk, playing basketball or Frisbee, listening to music, or just "hanging out" and relaxing. Transportation is provided!
Thomas Jefferson Newcomers Academy
Monday and Tuesday | 9:00 am - 11:50 am

Service participants will be tutoring and providing one on one assistance to high school students at the Thomas Jefferson International Newcomers Academy, a unique school in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District System that provides a welcoming learning environment for students who have just arrived to Cleveland from other countries and Puerto Rico. The Pre K - 12 school is designed to help students find their way in a new country with a different language and different customs. The school provides rigorous English as a Second Language (ESL) intervention classes and a comprehensive academic program.Transportation is provided!
Seeds of Literacy
Tuesday | 5:40 pm - 8:20 pm

Service participants will work one on one under the direction of a Seeds of Literacy educator to tutor adults for GED preparation and work to break a root cause of poverty: illiteracy. Transportation is provided!
Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry Chopping for Change
Wednesday | 8:30 am - 10:50 am

Service participants in this activity will work in the Chopping for Change Program, an innovative program that provides significant work experience and training for people in the criminal justice system. Participants will assist students in the program with computer skills in a career readiness class. This includes help with resumes, job applications, and interview practice. PREA training is required. Transportation is provided!
We're Hiring!
Carroll Reads is a federally-funded tutoring program aimed at helping children in elementary grades develop reading skills. If you are looking for a paid federal work-study position, this is a great opportunity to work with children in the community. Tutors are paid $8.80 per hour for tutoring twice/week, approximately 5 hours per week.

Responsibilities include:
  • Conducting one-on-one tutoring sessions with students using educator-provided materials.
  • Building rapport and cultivating enthusiasm with the children.
  • Assisting children in developing their reading and writing skills to reach grade-level expectations.
  • Weekly documenting and reviewing student data with the Carroll Reads Site Coordinators to gauge the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Regularly checking in with Carroll Reads Coordinators and Student Liaisons for continued training and assistance in tutoring.
  • Committing to tutoring two days per week, for ten weeks, over the course of the semester.

In 2021, the Ignatian Family Teach-In is not one but TWO conferences complete with unique lineups and ways to engage! Join virtually on October 16, in-person in Washington, D.C. from November 6-8, or both! No matter how you join, you’ll imagine a path forward with the Ignatian family as we put faith into action to build a more just world.
Participate in the Justice Conference at JCU

Register to attend The 7th Biennial JUHAN Student Leadership Conference, “Humanitarian Action and Climate Change.” The conference will be offered in a hybrid format on the evenings of Thursday, September 30 and Friday, October 1, and the morning of Saturday, October 2.

This is a national student skill-building and leadership conference for students from Jesuit academic institutions raising awareness about international humanitarian issues. JCU is the sponsor of this event and all JCU personnel, students, faculty, and staff may attend without charge.

Are you interested in seeing Cleveland by boat and enjoy team sports? Sign up for the Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival to take place Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm at Black River in Riverside Park in Lorain, Ohio. Transportation and lunch are provided, and registration is free.

An overview of the Day:
  • The event begins at 8:30 am & races start at 9:00 am.
  • The Awakening of the Dragons ceremony takes place at 8:30- you do not want to miss that!
  • The length of the race will be 250m.
  • Medals will be awarded.
