The Pre-Service Workshops will take place in person and provide detailed information about your service placement for the semester. Important details and logistics will be covered to help you get the most out of the experience and feel confident to get involved.

Before starting weekly service at John Carroll, all students must complete a Pre-Service Workshop to prepare for service and learn important details and logistics.

JCU Democracy Fellow Application
JCU is looking for a Democracy Fellow!
Are you passionate about voter education and active citizenship?

Get on-the-ground experience and trainings to make a difference and help JCU excel in voter engagement. In partnership with the Campus Vote Project, Democracy Fellows play a critical role in motivating their peers, faculty, and administrators to take part in nonpartisan democratic engagement activities on their campuses.

This position spans Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 and comes with a $500 spring stipend and $700 fall stipend.

Chris Suriano from JVC Northwest will be hosting a session on how to discern a year of service on Wednesday Feb 2nd from 7:00pm to 8:00pm in the Campus Ministry Conference Room.

Join Chris and Campus Ministry as we talk about vocations! Additionally Chris and JVC Northwest will be attending John Carroll’s Winter Career Exploration Fair on Thursday Feb 3rd if you can not attend the session but want to learn more!

A Year of Service With City Year!
City Year is a year to build your career foundation. At City Year, they believe that supporting children and young adults contributes to just, equitable and vibrant communities, and that when students rise, we all rise.  Together with their school and community partners, City Year seeks to support student success, advance educational equity, and nurture the next generation of civically engaged leaders. 
 
City Year is hiring in 29 locations for their year of service as an AmeriCorps Student Success Coach. During their service, City Year AmeriCorps Members receive a living stipend, healthcare benefits, professional development, student loan forbearance, an education award of approximately $6,495 and access to over 120 graduate school scholarships through our University Partnerships program.

Uncovering the Hidden
Curriculum of Graduate School
The Graduate School, along with Career Services and the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, invites undergraduate students in their junior or senior year, along with first-year graduate students, to participate in our discussion group "Uncovering the Hidden Curriculum of Graduate School."

Topics include:
  • How to select and apply for a graduate program
  • How to develop a strong mentoring network
  • How to make the best of your graduate student experience

Discussion sessions will be held on the following dates:
  • Thursday, February 10th
  • Thursday, March 3rd
  • Thursday, April 7th
  • Wednesday, May 4th

All sessions will take place from 5PM – 6PM with the option to attend in-person or via Zoom. Our discussion will be based on topics from A Field Guide to Graduate School: Uncovering the Hidden Curriculum by Jessica McCrory Calarco. Your complimentary copy of the book can be picked up from the Graduate School office in Suite AD 126 between the hours of 8:30AM and 5PM Monday – Friday.

In addition to the discussion group sessions, the Graduate School will be partnering with various departments here at JCU, providing workshops that will benefit you as you navigate the graduate school process.

Student Employment Opportunity: Now hiring!
Become an Early Literacy Tutor!

Carroll Reads is a federally-funded tutoring program aimed at helping children in elementary grades develop reading skills. If you are looking for a paid federal work-study position, this is a great opportunity to work with children in the community. Tutors are paid $11.00 per hour for tutoring twice/week, approximately 5 hours per week.

Responsibilities include:
  • Conducting one-on-one tutoring sessions with students using educator-provided materials.
  • Building rapport and cultivating enthusiasm with the children.
  • Assisting children in developing their reading and writing skills to reach grade-level expectations.
  • Weekly documenting and reviewing student data with the Carroll Reads Site Coordinators to gauge the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Regularly checking in with Carroll Reads Coordinators and Student Liaisons for continued training and assistance in tutoring.
  • Committing to tutoring two days per week, for ten weeks, over the course of the semester.
