Hello Student Community!
First, I would like to welcome the Fall 2024 cohort of 65 new students. You are beginning your MPH journey, one that will equip you to become leaders and changemakers in your organizations and communities, advancing health and healthcare for all. Soon, you will meet and engage with your fellow students, ranging from studying together, to working together on group projects, to meeting each other in-person during your summer visits. And speaking on behalf of the Online MPH staff and faculty advisors, please reach out to us if you have any questions (see Team Directory and Advising).
For all the students, ensure you are enrolled in your fall courses, which start Monday, August 26 (fall and fall 1 courses) or Monday, October 28 (fall 2 courses).
I met many of you during your summer visits, but for those I haven't met, I am the Faculty Lead for the Health Policy and Management Concentration and teach Health Economics (PW226A) in the program during the fall 2 semester. The concentration is designed to serve a variety of professionals—from clinicians to managers to policy leaders—across a range of healthcare areas, including hospitals and health systems, pharma/biotech, medical devices, health insurers, government agencies, think tanks, consulting firms, and digital health. If you are interested in learning more about the concentration, please contact me for curriculum, course, and career advising or Zoe Blalock, the Program Manager for the HPM concentration.
My research examines how markets and regulation can improve the delivery of healthcare, including its cost, quality, and access. Lately, I have been examining the impact of hospital mergers that span multiple markets as well as the impact on private equity ownership of physician practices. I am also developing public-private financing strategies that will provide funding for social drivers of health for people residing in low-income communities. More information about my research can be found at the Nicholas C. Petris Center on Health Care Markets and Consumer Welfare (website11), a health economics research center where I am the associate director.
Have a great fall semester!
Best,
Brent Fulton, PhD, MBA
HPM Faculty Lead
Associate Research Professor of Health Economics and Policy
Associate Director, Nicholas C. Petris Center on Health Care Markets and Consumer Welfare
