RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

Finneman publishes book

Associate Professor Teri Finneman's book, “Social Justice, Activism and Diversity in U.S. Media History,” has been published by Routledge. Finneman was a co-editor on the book, and Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye contributed the chapter, “Red Power in Print and Action.” The book shares unique stories of social justice, activism and diversity in American journalism history and incorporates multimedia to bring history to life for younger generations. Read the KU News story.

Associate Professor Mugur Geana traveled to Chile the week of April 16 to work with Chilean partners on developing their capacity to conduct research in health communication to underserved populations. Dr. Geana lectured about health communication theories and practices to the faculty and graduate students from the School of Medicine and the School of Communications at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUCC). He presented the work conducted at the Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Populations (CEHCUP) to researchers at PUCC, UFRO (Universidad de la Frontera in Temuco), and Universidad Austral (in Valdivia). He met with physicians and support staff at medical units serving local indigenous and rural communities. Dr. Geana guided Chilean researchers in designing several projects to understand attitudes and beliefs about health, and communication barriers for underserved populations in Chile. These projects are part of a larger initiative from Chilean partners to apply for a Nucleus Millenium grant. The visit also addressed academic exchanges between PUCC and KU. A PUCC School of Communications doctoral student will visit KU for a semester in the fall of 2023. Several PUCC's Department of Public Health graduate students have shown interest in research collaboration with KU counterparts. The framework for this outreach is based on a Memorandum of Collaboration signed between KU and PUCC in 2021, a document championed by Dr. Geana and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. The visit was funded by travel grants from the KU International Affairs office and KU's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Assistant Professor Chris Etheridge was quoted in a Fox 4 news story about podcasting by professional athletes such as the Kelce brothers. Read the story.

John Watson will defend his dissertation from noon to 2 p.m. May 2 in Room 2000, Dole Human Development Center. Topic: Adaptive athlete social media influencer posts and audience reception of the content.
