Getting to know Ewan McAloon

Player Name: Ewan McAloon

College Commitment: Cabrini

High School: Hough High School

Position: Midfielder

Graduating Class: 2022

What other schools did you consider?

Middlebury College, Emerson College, Salisbury University, Bryant University

How did the school you chose separate itself from the others you considered?

It just felt like home. When I left campus after my visit I went through a pros and cons list with my dad as we did after every visit. After seeing Cabrini and what it had to offer there seemed to be nothing on the cons side of the list.

How would you describe your recruiting process overall?

My recruiting process was a bit of a rollercoaster but I found the program I was meant to join. I was very thankful to the coaches who saw flashes of the player I am and the opportunities I had to continue my education and lacrosse career at the next level.

What was your favorite part of the recruiting process?

The relief of finishing my recruiting process was by far the favorite part. A close second would be visiting different campuses along the east coast and seeing the differences between each school.

What opportunities and information assisted you during your recruiting process?

Advice from coaches and other players telling me to take time with my process and not let the uncontrollable factors such as injuries or COVID-19 affect me. The recruiting process wasn't meant to feel or be rushed.

Did you feel like you had support from the Team 91 staff during your process? If so, how?

Yes, I did. Coach Flanagan and Coach Hannan definitely brought me the most help. They both walked me through certain schools, gave me advice on who to reach out to and how to handle situations with coaches.

What individual or showcase events, if any, did you find the most beneficial during your process?

Camps for the colleges I wanted to go to helped me gain some recruiting attention. I struggled during a three tournament stretch over the summer and when I attended camps of individual schools I was able to play extremely well and gain contact from coaches.

What would you tell younger players or parents to help them prepare for the recruiting process?

Don't let the process frustrate you, everything works out in the end. Not every coach who reaches out will end up offering you a roster spot.

Remain engaged and keep in contact and update coaches through emails, texts, and calls. Don’t wait for every coach to go to you, take the initiative and go to them.

Coach Flanagan on Ewan

A two-way midfielder that glides all over the field, can run a sub-6 minute mile effortlessly and can shoot the ball with both hands…that sounds like a pretty good combination. Ewan has as much athletic potential as any midfielder we have ever coached. As good as he was in high school, as he continues to develop his skills and gets bigger, faster, and stronger, he could be very special at Cabrini.

Ewan spent years running cross country and you can quickly tell when you watch him play lacrosse. He’s got a long stride that allows him to cover a ton of ground and makes him a huge threat in transition. It is very rare you see someone catch him as he pushes the ball from defense to offense. What began as an even numbered situation on one end of the field would often turn into an advantage for us on the other end as Ewan ran past the guys he was playing against. What made him even more dangerous was that if you didn’t stop him in transition, he could shoot the ball on the run as well as anyone on our team.

What I will always remember about Ewan was how much bigger, faster, and stronger he got between his junior and senior years. He was a guy that not only committed to getting in the weight room but also changed his diet. As a runner, he was always a little bit thinner growing up. He knew that if he wanted to play lacrosse at a high level in college, he would need to put meat on his bones. The only way to do that would be through getting in the gym and lifting heavier weights and eating more of the right things. Ewan set himself up with a nutritionist to create a plan that would allow him to put on good weight faster. He stuck to the plan he created and started eating more. He was putting on good weight and working hard in the gym and it allowed him to take his game to another level. It felt like he put on about 20lbs of good weight between the summer going into his sophomore year and the summer going into his senior season. Following a strict diet and eating enough can be really challenge for high schoolers but Ewan committed to it, and it made a huge difference in his development.

Ewan’s discipline to consume more good calories and his commitment to improving in the weight room to accomplish his goals on the lacrosse field are traits that are going to allow him to be successful in anything he does. He has a very bright future at Cabrini, and I cannot wait to watch!
