Feeding a Need

Sisters & Friends Help the Hungry Near Bethlehem

The Lehigh Valley community that our Sisters have served for more than 70 years again responded to our call to help our neighbors in need, donating non-perishable food, toiletries and cash donations during our drive-thru food drive at Monocacy Manor on April 27.

Accompanied by Monocacy Manor employees Ron Williams and Jeremy Unger, Sister M. Virginelle Makos and volunteer Jimmy Villani delivered a truck filled with food and toiletries to West Bethlehem Food Bank’s emergency food pantry at Star of Bethlehem Church, on April 29. A check for $1,475 accompanied the food haul, along with $120 in grocery gift cards. More than $200 came directly from the Sisters at Monocacy Manor who could not get out to shop themselves.

The donations were gratefully accepted by Bo Hintze, who has been in charge of the food pantry for more than 20. “We are eternally grateful for the continued support of the School Sisters of St. Francis and Monocacy Manor food drive,” he said. “Your massive donations are keeping our clients nourished. God bless you.”

For the Sisters and the volunteers who helped them including a student from Spain the annual drive is a labor of love. “There are many who have to count their pennies,” says Sister Virginelle. “We may not be able to help those who hunger around the world, but we can help those in our territory who are not as blessed as we are.”

Free Movie Screening:

Common Ground

In Person with Our Sisters

& Monocacy Farm Project

In partnership with Monocacy Farm Project, we invite you to a FREE private screening of Common Ground at 6:30 p.m. this Monday, May 20. Please join us in St. Francis Center at Monocacy Manor in Bethlehem, Pa. No RSVP is necessary.

Common Ground is the highly anticipated sequel to the documentary, Kiss the Ground, which reached more than a billion people globally and inspired the U.S. Department of Agriculture to commit $20 billion toward soil health.

In our commitment to care for the earth as our common home, the School Sisters of St. Francis and Monocacy Farm Project strive to cultivate right-relationship with indigenous peoples, and we value the agricultural methods used by them. We believe that Monocacy Farm Project’s practice of regenerative methods makes a difference locally and beyond. But there is much work to do.

Winner of the 2023 Human Nature Award at the Tribeca Film Festival, the film profiles a hopeful and uplifting movement of white, black, and indigenous farmers who are using alternative “regenerative” models of agriculture that could balance the climate, save our health, and stabilize America’s economy — before it’s too late.

Twilight Retreat:

Peace & Justice

In Person or Online with

Father Patrick Lamb

How can we find peace and justice in this chaotic, often violent world? Is it even possible? Join Father Patrick Lamb, paster of Queenship of Mary Parish in Northampton, Pa., for a special Twilight Retreat — Peace & Justiceset for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. this Tuesday, May 21.

Father will use stories and antidotes to show that we can find peace in this world — not perfect peace, but the ability to move through the challenges of life and become the person God has called us to be. Jesus, the Prince of Peace, will be our guide.

We will gather in the first-floor conference room of St. Francis Center at Monocacy Manor in Bethlehem, Pa. Online attendance through Zoom also is available.

Registration is $25 per person. Click below to register online now with a credit card. If you would prefer to pay by check or register by phone, contact Lauren Martin at 610-867-8890 or lmartin@schoolsistersosf.org.
