Nashville Meeting on track
Submit your abstract Now!

Greetings fellow veterinary diagnosticians! I hope all is going well and that you are enjoying the fresh air of spring. We are excited to be in the midst of our call for abstracts for the 2024 annual meeting in Nashville. A little history reminder: this is a rebooking of our cancelled Nashville meeting during the COVID pandemic. I know many of you were looking forward to meeting in Nashville, but it was out of everyone’s control back then. The good news is we are going to Nashville this year for a great scientific meeting and a great venue to interact with our colleagues and to enjoy some collegial time together. So don’t miss this great opportunity! SAVE THE DATE NOW 😊.
Last year we had over 200 scientific presentations, posters and several symposia for our attendees. We really want to see your diagnostic work highlighted and preserved, and hope you are considering a professional presentation. If you are a mentor or advising professor of a diagnostician trainee, please work with them and encourage a scientific submission for a live presentation or poster; it will build their CV and grow their professional skills. Also encourage them to apply for our various trainee awards including travel awards, and outstanding presentation awards. They are all listed in pertinent documents on our annual meeting website page; applicants apply as they submit their abstracts through our ScholarOne system. This year, only those applying for awards need to submit recordings (these recordings help our judges preview candidates for the various awards; an important process because we have so many great competitors). So please, SUBMIT YOUR ABSTRACTS BY JUNE 24TH. Let’s shock our Annual Meeting Program Chair by the number of great submissions!!
If you are a Committee Chair, spring and summer are great times to meet with your committees and discuss issues for your discipline and prepare for final deliberation and action at the annual meeting.
Lastly, we are enormously proud of the response put forth by many of our AAVLD laboratories relative to the avian influenza outbreak occurring across the country and now including dairy cattle. It has been a challenging time for the poultry and dairy industry, but I hear much appreciation regarding the laboratory response to testing needs, which continues as farms recover and resume their vital business of food production. The AAVLD/NVSL partnership between state and federal laboratories has once again proven to be a vital infrastructure for food producers and consumers. Thank you all for your dedicated efforts!
Most sincerely,
David H. Zeman, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Only those applying for awards need to submit a recording, and those recordings are due by September 4th, 2024. I’m looking forward to seeing you all in Nashville!

How dairy production is changing in
response to avian flu
| |
New measures to stop avian flu among dairy cows are taking effect, such as testing dairy herds before they cross state lines. But farmers who voluntarily report infections stand to lose money.

Bird Flu Outbreak in Dairy Cows Is Widespread, Raising Public Health Concerns
The ongoing global avian influenza outbreak that began in 2020 has now spread widely to US dairy cows in multiple states and is raising concerns about risks to people.
To date, the cattle outbreak has been linked with an infection in 1 person, a dairy farm worker in Texas with conjunctivitis who has since recovered. This is the first report of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus likely transmitting from a mammal to a human.
A new report on the dairy worker’s case by Tim Uyeki, MD, MPH, MPP, chief medical officer of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) influenza division, and colleagues says it’s not clear how the person acquired the infection—whether it was by touching the eye with contaminated hands or via respiratory exposure. The person was prescribed oral oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and recovered within days without developing respiratory symptoms, according to the report.

Betanodavirus meningoencephalitis in an Atlantic blue marlin, Cook et al.
Abstract. Viral nervous necrosis (viral encephalopathy and retinopathy) is caused by piscine nodavirus (Nodaviridae, Betanodavirus). Since 1986, this highly infectious virus has caused mass mortalities of up to 100% in farmed saltwater and freshwater fish around the world (with the exception of South America and Antarctica), affecting >60 species across 10 orders. The Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans Lacépède, 1802) is a top-level predator found throughout the tropical waters of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific oceans. Despite their popularity as a sportfish, relatively little is known about the Atlantic blue marlin and other billfish. We describe here chronic betanodavirus infection in a juvenile Atlantic blue marlin, which is, to our knowledge, the first report of disease in M. nigricans. More
