Special Report:
Statements of Support for Railroad Workers
Organizations Send Rail Workers Greetings of Solidarity and Support
Over the past few weeks, numerous organizations large and small have made contact with RWU, offering financial assistance, advice, encouragement, support and solidarity for railroad workers. Below are a dozen of some of the best of the bunch!
The APWU writes one of the most comprehensive and militant letters of solidarity. The letter in effect calls for public ownership of the railroad network.
Our friends at the Flight Attendants union work under the RLA just like us on the railroad. President Sarah Nelson and staffer Joe Burns spoke at our Convention in June 2022.
The Greens are one of the largest and long running "Third Parties" in the U.S. Great to see them speaking up in support of railroad workers.
More than 500 Historians signed a letter of solidarity with rail workers, and urged Biden to do the right thing. RWU is in the process of making contact with them to work together.
ATU represented bus, light rail, and train operators stand with freight railroad workers.
One of the most forward thinking state labor federation \s in the country weighs in with their support of railroad workers.
RWU has partnered with the Labor Network for Sustainability for a number of years now. We are a dues paying member of the Coalition.
RWU has worked closely with Solutionary Rail for nearly a decade. A proponent of an expanded and developed rail network for both freight and passenger trains. A great ally!
Our fellow workers on the west coast docks weight in with support for freight railroaders. We in turn will be supporting them in their contract struggle in the coming months!
The UE represents workers who build GE/Wabtec locomotives, crew van drivers, and warehouse workers, among others. RWU has worked closely with UE for more than a decade now. A great fighting and democratic union!
Based in Chicago, La Coalition is one of many community and environmental groups that work alongside RWU to push for safe railroad operations.
The Steelworkers Union has a small presence in rail labor, historically representing some workers at steel mill railroads. A big refinery local in California (#696) who we have worked with in the past on safety issues donated $500 in November!
A powerful rally of various workers - including our own Ike Nahem who speaks at 12 minutes in - comes together in New York City. Unions represented include BLET, SMART-TD, ACRE, ALPA, TWU, ATU, IWW, NSNA, ALU among others.) At 47 minutes in, the crowd marches through Grand Central Station chanting, "Sick Days are Human Rights!" and "Strike Breakers NO, Rail Workers YES!"
