In my box of paints, I include bright luminous tubes of color. Mixing these bright, fluorescent colors with regular colors creates a surprise color. I love painting this way! This adds an attention-getting sparkle to your focal point.
I made a special studio reference color chart just for these luminous colors. I find this chart works for me because it helps me quickly decide where to emphasize and augment the focal point—even before I start the painting. This step seems so minor, but all these steps help me be a better painter AND a mad scientist, in the comfort and safety of my own studio.
After many practice paintings using these luminous colors, I felt confident enough to mix the luminous colors directly into the wet canvas, making sure to not over mix. If I do, I stop and add Titanium white to the mix. Adding the white “softens” the combined colors and practically becomes a neutral. This tip may not be an ah-ha moment… but I have discovered it gives me more options to play with.
You may have heard the fluorescent/luminous colors may be unstable and not archival. Mixing them with stable acrylics and finishing the painting with a final UV acrylic varnish can help!
Last April we had a great, sold out event! "Paint with Luminous Acrylics".

Here is the commercial: Holbein conveniently has a set of six Heavy Body Acrylic Luminous Colors in Rose, Opera, Red, Orange, Yellow and Lemon. They are not subtle colors - that's one reason why I like to paint with them! These bright colors are not for the faint of heart, but instead challenge your strong, creative self! I use the luminous colors for the fun of it! Be the kid in the sandbox and play longer… you don’t even need a lab coat.
