SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

PENTECOST

Pentecost comes from the Greek word that means fiftieth. This is a church holiday that is celebrated 50 days after Easter. And it is at this holiday that we read stories from the early church and their extraordinary experience with the Holy Spirit that comes like individual flames of fire that are distributed to the people in the loud room. But this year, along with the story from the early church, we will be exploring the ways that this Spirit continues to breathe new life into the places that we might think have passed long ago. The valley of dry bones can too be filled with the Spirit, to be given new life, and sent out to proclaim the Good News. So whether you feel like the disciples filled with the Spirit to speak in tongues, like the valley filled with dry bones, or somewhere in between, we invite you to join us.

Yours in Christ,

Brandon

He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life."

-- Ezekiel 37:3-5

NOTEWORTHY GREEN SPACE NEWS

Scientists have long known that sunflower petals produce ultraviolet (UV)-absorbing pigments that create bull's-eye patterns invisible to humans but not to insects such a bees. Experiments have shown that these UV bull's-eyes help attract pollinators. Now, in a study of nearly 2,000 wild sunflowers, researchers at the University of British Columbia find that sunflower UV patterns also help the plants survive by regulating water loss.

"Unexpectedly, we noticed that sunflowers growing in drier climates had flowers with larger UV bull's-eyes and found that those flowers are able to retain water more efficiently," says author and plant geneticist Marco Todesco. Writing in eLife, he explains that larger bull's-eyes contain more UV-absorbing compounds called flavolols that prevent excessive water loss. By contrast, in hot, humid habitats, he and other researchers saw sunflowers with smaller UV patterns—and presumably fewer flavonols—which would likely promote transpiration and help avoid overheating.       (GSN#150)

Bethlehem: Biography of a Town

By Nicholas Blincoe

(913.56/BLI)

Bethlehem is so suffused with history and myth that it feels like an unreal city even to those who call it home. For many, Bethlehem remains the little town at the edge of the desert described in Biblical accounts. Today, the city is hemmed in by a wall and surrounded by forty-one Israeli settlements and hostile settlers and soldiers.

Nicholas Blincoe tells the town's history through the visceral experience of living there, taking readers through its stone streets and desert wadis, its monasteries, aqueducts, and orchards to show the city from every angle and era. His portrait of Bethlehem sheds light on one of the world's most intractable political problems, and he maintains that if the long thread winding back to the city's ancient past is severed, the chances of an end to the Palestine-Israel conflict will be lost with it.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
