Four Rivers Co-operative was formally incorporated on August 2, 1944 within the municipality of Vanderhoof, BC, under the Co-operative Act of British Columbia. Originally established as Vanderhoof Co-operative Association, served as an egg pooling depot with a focus on providing services in food, coal, and feed operations. Vanderhoof Co-op gradually expanded its operations to include retail grocery services in 1949. The year 1957 marked the first year our co-op made it’s cash dividend payment to our members.
Our commitment to diversification led us into other markets
such as agriculture and fuel. Despite encountering setbacks, notably the tragic loss of our Agriculture Centre and grain elevator to a fire in 1975, we persisted. Shortly thereafter, the Co-op Mall, which stands today in Vanderhoof, was constructed over a period of 16 months and officially opened in 1978, along with our food store.
As our co-operative grew over time, we acquired and established additional locations, and merged with other co-operatives across central British Columbia including: Houston in 2001, Terrace Cardlock location in 2004, and Quesnel’s North Cariboo Growers Co-op in 2008. In 2016, the Board of Directors felt the time had come to change the legal name of our co-operative, to include our broad geographical area and our diverse membership. A contest was held in which our members could submit their name suggestions. The Board of Directors held a vote and presented the name they selected from the more than 160 submissions at the Annual General Meeting on April 24, 2017 and received an 86% approval rate in favor of changing the legal name of our co-operative. Effective May 11, 2017, our legal name became Four Rivers Co-operative, in tribute to the four largest rivers located in our trading area: the Nechako, the Fraser, the Bulkley, and the Skeena.
In 2022, our co-operative acquired 10 Husky retail gas bars across our trading area followed by the acquisition of Spruce Capital Feeds in Prince George, BC, in 2024. Currently, our co-operative operates 33 locations which include: 16 cardlocks locations, 4 Bulk Petroleum locations, 14 convenience stores, 12 gas bars, 3 Agro locations - including one fertilizer blending plant, 2 wand washes, a touchless car wash, a food store, and home centre
