A Message from our Executive Director |

Welcome to the 2022 Winter Issue of Arts Ed Thread. Each issue contains updates from Palmetto State Arts Education along with our partner organizations, to help you stay in the know about all things arts education in South Carolina.
Since our last issue in May, PSAE has been extremely busy offering professional development to teachers. Our summer institutes yielded great results for attendees and our annual conference on arts integration was a big hit. Held in October with the theme of Creativity, over 300 excited educators, administrators, and teaching artists came together to focus on arts integrated education. The atmosphere was electric as so many PSAE members, friends, and collaborators were able to share successes and lessons learned in and out of the classroom. Be on the lookout for an opportunity to let us know what you liked about this year’s conference as we’ll be sending out a survey soon. We’ll announce details about the 2023 conference after the holidays!
PSAE welcomed a new executive director, Jenny Kabool, who will take over leadership of the organization when I retire at the end of this year. As its long-time Executive Director, I was thrilled to receive PSAE's first ever Lifetime Achievement Award winner at our conference in October.

Growing up in Gaffney, South Carolina, I found a community of friendship in the arts and on the stage as I attended acting classes at the local community theater. I signed up for every performing arts class I could every year I was in high school. When I attended the College of Charleston, I switched from the limelight of the stage to administration as I studied Arts Management. I had wonderful teachers every step of the way guiding me and teaching me. I learned not only the craft of performing, but confidence, empathy, and responsibility.
Because of my experience in having the help and guidance of amazing arts teachers in my life, I am extremely excited to pay it forward to teachers in South Carolina in my new role. As I work to provide support for educators and help to position arts education as a part of a well-rounded education for all students in South Carolina, I look forward to meeting every one of you. Access to quality arts education is important to all of us and I am so excited to be a part of the collaborative arts environment in my home state.

Rising Stars Piccolo Spoleto 2023 |

Help Us Celebrate Our Artistically Gifted Young People! |
PSAE is currently planning for the 15th year of its 2023 Rising Stars Piccolo Spoleto Series. The series gives young artists the opportunity to participate in the high-profile venue of Spoleto USA Festival through its affiliation with Piccolo Spoleto.

Who is eligible?
- Students between the ages of 9 and 18 who are not full-time college students
- Students who are visual artists, actors, dancers, creative writers, and musicians (instrumentalists and vocalists)
A series of six programs, each program will feature 5-7 young artists and/or ensembles in a conversation and performance format. The programs will receive special recognition and be listed in the Festival program. All programs are presented at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church across from Marion Square on King Street in the heart of downtown Charleston.
Applications will be available starting January 1, 2023.

Purpose: To help schools acquire the supplies, materials, professional development, or other tools/expertise to address learning loss gaps in the arts, promote innovation in the arts classroom, and/or support arts integration initiatives to remediate core subject areas. Learn more and apply!

Application Deadline: Rolling, Apply by the first Monday of each month
Application Period: September 5, 2022 - March 6, 2023
Eligibility: Most public, private, and charter schools in SC
*ABC schools are not eligible
Funding: Up to $2,500 per award; schools can receive up to two awards per year

Purpose: To help 4K providers at designated locations offer arts integrated experiences for students and professional development for teachers to use the arts to increase kindergarten readiness. Learn more and apply!

Funding: Up to $2,000 per year
Eligibility: All S.C. Department of Education Childhood Early Reading and Development Education Program (CERDEP) 4K Providers.

Conferences are about Community |
Just like our students - it is important for teachers to learn and grow as a community of creative professionals. ABC Institute is proud to present, Arts Grow SC: Tools, Resources, and Opportunities for Arts Educators and highlight the variety of Arts Grow SC programs and resources being developed to support quality arts education and arts integration at various state conferences. Additionally, we invite you to stop by the ABC Institute booth in the exhibit halls to introduce yourself or reconnect with us.

Everyone can take advantage of One Stop Workshop, a completely free, fully virtual professional learning conference for SC teachers. This virtual platform offers a “one-stop” source for professional learning on arts in education, offering content for both educators interested in arts integration as well as discipline-specific arts specialists. On-demand and live-stream content will be continuously added from colleagues across the state as well as state agencies and national vendors. Visit often and interact to win monthly prizes.
Save the date! SC Arts in Education Forum
ABC Institute will host its annual SC Arts in Education Forum, Jan 20, 2023 in Columbia. Participants will engage in sessions focused on issues and initiatives connected to Arts Grow SC’s plan to support SC students’ academic recovery efforts through equitable access to quality arts education and art integration.

Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program |
The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) is announcing the Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program. This annual program offers public school twelfth-grade students the opportunity to compete for a scholarship worth approximately $2,000 in creative writing, dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. The purpose of the competition is to encourage and recognize academic and artistic excellence.
Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program information is available on the SCDE website. Applications are due February 20, 2023.

Introduce your students to Careers in the Arts with a Field Trip to Campus or a visit from our Admissions Team. Our new careers-based Field Trip is designed especially for groups in specific art areas. Students will explore the variety of "unexpected" careers for which the arts can prepare them and will explore the specialized facilities in which our artists practice these unique skills each day. Finally, students will hear from a member of our faculty (based on availability) about their artistic career. Can’t make it to campus? We’re also partnering with the Office of Admissions to bring a standards-based Careers in the Arts presentation directly to your school

AASC Artists Training
Each year AASC offers training opportunities for artists interested in working in AASC programs, workshops, festivals, in-school residencies and with community service organizations. This first time ever on FRIDA. December 2, 2022, we will discuss HYBRID TRAINING (Virtual & Face-to-Face) and will include the overall history and mission of AASC; how to conduct yourself in schools as a professional artist; creating lesson plans that correlate with school curriculum; how to identify schools in your area that hire independent contractors as teaching artists; how to market yourself as an artist; and networking with other AASC teaching artists and master teaching artists.

ARTS ACCESS South Carolina (AASC) delivers arts experiences and arts educational services to students and adult persons with disabilities throughout South Carolina. The arts education services include partnerships with schools and community organizations for the following: one day-artists visits, multiple week-long residencies, workshops, afterschool programs, evening classes, and festivals. Programs will be offered in the following formats: hybrid, virtual, and/or face to face.
AASC’s priority is to continue to practice Covid safety protocols in face-to-face formats. Activities can be inclusive or self-contained. But ALL residencies must have I.D.E.A. = Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access. Programs are supported in part from the S.C. Arts Commission, which is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
