In her last act as President, Alyson E. Bass, introduced the incoming Board. Following the Installation, The new Board gathered with members for a luncheon at The Barnyard Station in Farmingdale, NY.

The Installation occured in Amityville, NY at the Prayer Tabernacle Church of God. Bishop Walter Willie welcomed AMISTAD on Jan 20, 2025 to hold its installation following the annual MLK Day of Service.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

*KHADIJAH MUHAMMAD-STARLING*

Meet Khadijah Muhammad-Starling, long-time AMISTAD member. with a long career in criminal prosecutions.

Having received a B.S. from Cornell University and a J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law-Newark, Khadijah served as a prosecutor in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office from 1987 to 1990.


In 1991, joined the staff of the Grievance Committee for the Second and Eleventh Judicial Districts, Appellate Division, Second Department as Associate Counsel. There she investigated attorney misconduct complaints and conducted suspension & disbarment hearings.


In 1992, Khadijah returned to the field of criminal prosecution when she joined the staff of the Queens County DA’s Office. She was assigned to the Public Corruption Bureau where she investigated and prosecuted public officials for the commission of

criminal offenses.


In 2003, Khadijah joined the staff of the U.S. Dept. of Justice. She served as a federal prosecutor in the Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Section, prosecuting individuals for international drug trafficking offenses. While in DC, Khadijah also served as an Asst Attorney General in the capacity of a forfeiture prosecutor.

In 2006, Khadijah rejoined the Queens County DA's Office. There she prosecuted individuals who committed economic crimes against the elderly. In September 2015, she was promoted to the position of Deputy Bureau Chief of the Public Corruption Bureau. In January of 2022 she was promoted to the position of Chief of the Public Corruption Bureau. She was the first African American and first woman to be appointed to the position of Bureau Chief of Public Corruption. In August of 2024, Khadijah retired from that position.


Throughout her tenure as an Assistant District Attorney, Khadijah has tried numerous cases, served as a Special Prosecutor and has investigated public officials for major crimes involving bribery, grand larceny, tax fraud, police excessive force, official misconduct, scheme to defraud and attorney escrow account thefts. She has also prosecuted individuals for attempted murder, arson, and various assaults. Khadijah has also supervised several wiretaps throughout her career as a state and federal prosecutor.


In addition to her membership in Amistad, Khadijah has served as a mentor to young African American prosecutors. She is also a member of several community service

organizations, such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, the LINKS, Inc., Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and the Mothers Club of Wheatley Heights, where she participates in mentorship programs, scholarship

programs for youth and cultural programs. Khadijah is married, has 4 adult children and 1 grandson.

MLK Day of Service a Great Success!


On January 20, 2025 AMISTAD members held a Pro Bono Clinic at the Prayer Tabernacle Chuch or God in Amityville. Members of the community sought advice on various legal concerns in the areas of Landlord-Tenant, Estate Planning, Family Law, and Employment.


Each year AMISTAD hosts a Day of Service event in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During the Covid pandemic, AMISTAD held the Day of Service through webinars and online discussions. In person consultations returned in 2024.

New York State Assemblyman, Kwani O'Pharrow stopped by the Day of Service to greet the attendees and thank AMISTAD for its continued service and leadership on Long Island.

LEGAL NEWS & UPDATES

Request for Public Comment:


The Administrative Board of the Courts is soliciting public comments on the following four proposed amendments to court rules (copies attached):

 

  • Adding a new Rule 23 to the Rules of the Commercial Division regarding the filing of amicus briefs;

 

  • Amending 22 NYCRR § 202.70(c)(5) to clarify that the Commercial Division can enforce judgments arising from cases decided by the Commercial Division;

 

  • Amending 22 NYCRR § 25.18 to ensure consistency with the Civil Service Law relating to continuing eligible lists; and

 

  • Amending Rules 1.8, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12 and 1.18 of the Rules of Professional Conduct regarding conflicts of interest.

 

The first proposal has been posted on the OCA website at https://ww2.nycourts.gov/rules/comments/index.shtml, and comments are due by Friday, February 7, 2024. Comments for the remaining proposals are due by February 14, 2025.
