Dear TROY ,

It is hard to believe December is almost over and along with it the end of our first semester at TROY School. This semester brought with it a variety of NEW experiences to TROY; new teachers and staff, new students, a new therapy dog, a new senior seminar course and new student internships. However, our most exciting "NEW" activity for the school year is our new partnership with Whitko Career Academy. We are thrilled about this partnership and currently have five students attending morning classes for welding/machining and culinary arts (pictured above). Students attending the career academy have worked extremely hard to be considered for enrollment and we are incredibly proud of how they have performed during their first semester. At the career academy students are learning real world skills and will receive industry recognized certifications that prepare them for a successful future in their field of study. Our partnership with the career academy provides select TROY students with additional options for their futures and we are excited to see this partnership grow with the potential of more students attending the career academy next fall.

They say time flies when you are having fun and our days and months flew by this semester! Now, I would not say it is all fun every day, but I cannot think of a better investment of time than to walk through life with these teenagers. I am looking forward to bringing students back in the building in January and updating you on their successes during our second semester.

Wishing you a happy, healthy & safe new year !

Cindy Baker, Executive Director

Meet Lennox

As mentioned in the article above, one of our fun NEW activities this semester was introducing our new therapy dog, Lennox, to our students. Given the wide array of life experiences that students bring with them to TROY, having a therapy dog to greet them, sit with them during one on one mental health sessions or during class will help us continue to meet our students "where they are", offering a safe, supportive learning environment creating even deeper connections. Not only have we seen Lennox bring positive support to students and staff, we have also seen students step into the responsibilities of taking care of Lennox on the days she is in the building. It has been heartwarming to see some of our most challenging students loving on Lennox, playing with her and sometimes showing us a softer side to themselves that we do not often see.

Last spring TROY School was fortunate to receive a generous donation that allowed us to purchase Lennox as a trained therapy dog. If she looks familiar to you, her sister is Whitley, the therapy dog for Whitley County Probation and Community Corrections.

The Season of Giving

During the month of December TROY students took time away from their classes to volunteer in the community, spreading holiday cheer to others. Many hours were spent bell ringing for Salvation Army of Whitley County, as well as spending time helping at Toys for Tots and BABE of Whitley County and visiting residents at The Waters of Columbia City and Oak Pointe. It was enjoyable watching our students experience the joy that comes in helping others and connecting with our community. For many students, it stretches them way out of their comfort zone, but most would report that it was worth the discomfort and they had fun outside of their comfort zone!

As we head into the final days of 2022 and look back over our year, we cannot help but feel truly blessed to be part of this community. We honestly could not do what we do at TROY School without you believing in us, supporting us and loving us. Your unwavering support is crucial in allowing us to make a difference in the lives of students who need us the most.

It's not too late to join us in making a difference in the lives of our students this school year. Gifts to TROY School may be made year round and we continue to accept year-end contributions to our annual fund which supports the general operation of our program.
