Photofeature: Law Enforcement ‘National Night Out’ in the Park
A SusanvilleStuff Photofeature
by Marshel and Jeremy Couso
Law enforcement, first responders and public agencies from across Lassen County came out to Memorial Park Tuesday afternoon as they celebrated National Night Out with families from the community, who came to take part in the fun activities.
All across the country National Night Out celebrations promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood togetherness to make our towns safer, more caring places to live.
One of the goals of the event is to enhance the relationship between residents and law enforcement while helping to foster a sense of community.

Salvation Army Looking for
Volunteer Back to School Shoppers
Summer break is coming to an end and back-to-school activities beckon to millions of families nationwide. Parents are already hitting the store aisles to grab various school supplies, but amid the hustle and bustle of nabbing deals and buying new clothes is an often overlooked reality: many kids are without basic back-to-school necessities.
Just the necessary supplies, which could range from clothing to calculators, can be costly for the average family who will spend $670 this year on supplies and clothing. The biggest cost for back-to-school shoppers? Apparel and accessories, followed by electronics.
| |
|
That’s why each year The Salvation Army coordinates back-to-school events and distributions for families in need of a helping hand. From collecting supplies from local donors and partnering businesses, to stuffing backpacks and coordinating events, The Salvation Army relies on the hearts and hands of supporters and volunteers to make these events possible.
Here in Susanville the Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to help with the Back-to-School Shopping event at Walmart, September 14th, from 9:00a.m. until 4:30p.m.
About 180 Lassen County students will have $125 each to shop for school clothes that day and the organization needs quite a few volunteers to help them shop.

Western Pacific Agent Gives Assurance to Merchants in Lassen
August 9, 1910
J.K. Junkins, traveling freight agent for the Western Pacific Railway company, has been in Susanville for several days past interviewing the business men here. The bulk of the freight for this place will undoubtedly come by way of the Western Pacific from now on, as it is a great advantage to the local merchants to have it come over that route.
Mr. Junkins states that regular passenger service over his company’s line, which will be started on August 22, will accord two daily trains each way. This will afford the residents of this section better transportation facilities to the bay cities than heretofore.
The nearest station on the line is Doyle, which is forty-five miles from here. Automobile service has already been established between here and Doyle, and the fare to that place is $5.
Mr. Junkins says the fare on the railroad to San Francisco from the Doyle station will be $9.20. This will make the fare from here to San Francisco $14.20 – the lowest it has ever been.
