The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) published its report on the 15 December 2019, involving the bulk carrier Tecumseh, that had a fire in the engine room while transiting the Detroit River off Windsor, Ontario.

At 1406, the engineering assistant was carrying out a routine round of the engine room and the third engineer was re-entering the engine room from the steering gear flat when they both observed that a fire had ignited near the port main engine. They immediately proceeded to the ECR, where the third engineer called the bridge and reported the fire to the master. At the same time, the fire detection system sounded in the engine room and on the bridge panels. Thick smoke rapidly developed in the engine room, and the third engineer and the engineering assistant evacuated the engine room.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Lincoln Fire and Rescue says a small fire in a mechanical room at Lincoln East High School caused quite a few problems for firefighters. Battalion Chief Bob Watton says crews were called to the school around 1:30 a.m., initially on a fire alarm. LFR says that firefighters, once inside, found their way to an area of the building that had smoke in it. They then upgraded the call in order to have additional personnel respond.

Watton says crews eventually found a small fire, which was still active, inside a mechanical room in the basement area of the northwest portion of the building.

Best Way to Extinguish a Data Center Fire
11/16/22

MarketScreener

Emergency horns are blaring and a flurry of activity is spreading across the grounds of the data center in Biere. One, two, three, no - no less than four fire trucks are speeding to the security gate of the data center. There seems to be a fire inside - and the fire department? Standing outside for the time being. Because this door is at least as well guarded as Fort Knox. But in the event of a fire, everything is different. And so the floodgates open and the fire department enters. Fortunately, it's only for the annual fire drill. A good occasion to ask: How do you extinguish a fire in a data center? How does it differ from a normal house fire?
The Importance of Protecting Fire Alarm Systems from Power Surges

Surge protection delivers peace of mind for organizations as do fire alarm systems for their employees and guests

The importance of fire alarm systems cannot be overstated. From saving lives to protecting valuable property and equipment, fire alarm systems are a mainstay of all modern buildings. So much so that their use in residences, businesses, and public buildings is mandated under a number of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes. NFPA codes ensure applicable fire and life safety systems are functioning properly and consistently. If a system is found to be in violation of fire codes due to downtime or other mismanagement, the deploying organization could be subject to costly fines and/or facility shutdowns.

Stadiums have multiple potential fire hazards for which protection is needed. The main hazards identified from previous fire incidents are mostly related to electrical equipment and other machinery. The safety measures to mitigate these risks vary depending on the type of venue. In this case, the primary focus is the protection of the Electrical Rooms, Switchgear and Battery Rooms. A fire incident in any of these areas can have catastrophic consequences especially during live events where spectators are present.
Worth of Honeywell Stock if You Had Invested a Decade Ago

For most investors, how much a stock's price changes over time is important. Not only can it impact your investment portfolio, but it can also help you compare investment results across sectors and industries.

Another factor that can influence investors is FOMO, or the fear of missing out, especially with tech giants and popular consumer-facing stocks.

What if you'd invested in Honeywell International Inc. (HON) ten years ago? It may not have been easy to hold on to HON for all that time, but if you did, how much would your investment be worth today?

Sustainability Can Pose Some Challenges for Fire Safety
11/21/22

By Ron Alalouff, Freelance journalist
IFSEC Global

At the Fire Conference 2022, delegates heard about the need to put sustainability at the heart of what fire safety professionals think and do from Steve Hamm, Chief Executive of the Institution of Fire Engineers.

The topic of sustainability is so important that the impetus for it has to come from the top of organizations, said Steve Hamm. “Some things have to come from the board – sustainability is one of those.”

Once that is the case, an organization such as the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) needs to inject sustainability into everything it does. For example, how do we assess membership and registration, ethics, values, behavior, CPD and qualifications in terms of sustainability? The syllabus is certainly getting broader.

When Cooling Systems Fail

As the climate warms, and facilities attempt to minimize cooling for efficiency reasons, we could see a trend for cooling systems failures

It is widely assumed that data center failures normally have electrical causes, usually (and perhaps ironically) in the uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Batteries in the UPS are a common source of danger, and can lead to more extreme incidents of fires.

Blazing lithium-ion battery rooms feature prominently in data center operators’ nightmares - and rightly so. OVHcloud has yet to share details of the cause of its disastrous fire in 2021, but published reports make it clear that batteries and inverters were at the heart of it.

The True Cost When a Business Must Close Because of a Fire
Fire Safety Search

At a time of rising production costs, high energy bills and dwindling cash reserves, many businesses are facing an uphill battle when it comes to staying afloat in such challenging economic times. But what happens when those very same businesses are hit by fire, one of the primary causes of business interruption? How does fire impact businesses and their staff and what is the true cost to local community and economy?

It is not uncommon for private businesses to go into receivership following a major fire. Small businesses and some medium-sized ones find it impossible to recover from the effect of a blaze; and evidence shows larger businesses often choose to consolidate operations in other sites following the loss of a site to fire.

One of the most important things to do in case of a fire is to have a working fire extinguisher. A fire extinguisher can help to put out a small fire or keep it from spreading until the firefighters arrive. It is also essential to know how to use a fire extinguisher properly so that you can protect yourself and others from harm.

For tiny house fires, older fire extinguishers are unnecessarily heavy and inconvenient to use, especially for young children and older adults. The new StaySafe 5-in-1 Fire Extinguisher can be your savior here. StaySafe comes in a small handy can, and you just have to point it at the source of the fire and spray.
