LISTEN: To poet Gil Scott-Heron’s spoken word, “Whitey on the Moon,” released in 1970, when America was putting huge amounts of money toward the space program while Black people suffered from poverty and despair here at home. When listening, consider the poem’s relevance now that 50+ years have passed. Poem
VISIT: Black-owned business Four Pegs, a Germantown eatery owned by Chris Williams, executive chef and pitmaster, who is also the proprietor of the Café 502 food truck. Since buying the property in 2018, Chris has transformed Four Pegs into one of Louisville’s premiere gastropubs, specializing in smoked foods and inventive dishes sure to please carnivores and vegetarians alike. READ: After nearly 80 years of Major League Baseball becoming integrated, the record books are finally going to show it. In May 2024, the MLB announced it has fully incorporated statistics from the seven Negro Leagues that operated between 1920 and 1948, recognizing the accomplishments of more than 2,300 players previously omitted from the historical record. All-time stats look dramatically different now. Read about it here.

LEARN: As we celebrated some racial progress in the past 4 years, we are now seeing a backlash and erosion of the gains that have been made. The following 3 stories in the headlines this past month are very troubling.

READ: A Virginia school district has voted to change the name it changed in 2020 back to honor a Confederate general. Virginia schools

READ: The Venture Capital group, Fearless Fund, was created to support Black female entrepreneurs–who’ve been historically excluded from access to financing. An appeals court recently blocked Fearless Fund from issuing grants earmarked for businesses owned by Black women. Reuters article
JOURNAL: The previous 3 activities are stark examples of reversals of racial progress. Write your thoughts on any backlash you have seen to racial progress, either now or in the past. Consider why it’s happening and possible ways to address it.
