Thanksgiving Road Trip
Hi everyone! With the holidays quickly approaching and events loading the calendar, this newsletter is shorter than usual. We’ve been in such a time crunch that we barely got our tree up. Going into the forest to find the perfect tree is always a highlight of the season.
I thought I would begin with our recent four-state, ten-day road trip over Thanksgiving. The first stop wasn't too far from home: Santa Fe for the one-year celebration of the Santa Fe Magazine. As the subject of one of their feature articles this past year, I was invited. This young publication is truly fun and unique. They feature mostly stories about people – all kinds of interesting people with fascinating lives and talents. I met a lot of them that night.

Next stop: Albuquerque for my grandson Jaden’s wedding. It had been a while since I went to a wedding, but I think this was the nicest I’ve ever attended. Held in a sleek, glass-sided, modern building, it was cozy and intimate. Perfect for photos, talking over dinner, listening to funky music and dancing. We did get lost in the parking garage, which was hilarious because we kept going up and down the elevator and running into other frazzled guests who were also lost. It became comical after the 3rd or 4th time the doors opened and we encountered the same wandering people yet again. Turns out, the garage elevator didn't stop at the level we needed, and after about 15-20 minutes of roaming, we teamed up and pooled our knowledge. Finally, we tried the stairwell... Success! LOL.

Two days later, we went to quite a different type of family event – a memorial ceremony and celebration of life for my sister Pita at the San Felipe de Neri church in Old Town. Pita was dearly loved by so many people, and the church was packed with friends and family, which was so nice to see. The service was incredibly beautiful. They even had a mariachi band playing throughout! What a wonderful way to remember and honor Pita, who adored music and dancing.
Leaving the service in a somewhat melancholy mood, on route to the Oklahoma ranch, we stopped at my good buddy Walter’s ranch near Gruver, TX, to spend the night. I've written about Walter in a story on thanking our farmers (read HERE). As always, we ended up in his glorious barn, where he blasts music so loudly that it shakes the hundreds of tequila bottles hanging from the ceiling. Warmed by a wood-burning stove, we chatted, drank cocktails and listened to (loud & vibrating) music.
And the grand finale – Thanksgiving on the Vickery farm/ranch. Oh I love going there. I get to ride along with Garrett (who was also featured in the Thank a Farmer story) and Vance as they feed the always hungry cattle. I love getting the chance to be a cowboy for a day. After we feed, I do admit I grab my iPad to get photos of the steers munching happily. Ha! Beautiful there, with vast fields all around, the sounds of cattle mooing in the evenings and sunsets lighting up the old windmill. And those Vickery girls know how to put on a FEAST.

During our stay, we swung up to Wichita, KS, to pick up the 2023 calendars and go antique shopping. There are HUGE antique malls in and around Wichita, and we tried to go into all of them. The quest for a special, unique item never ends... Leaving, we were a bit guilt-ridden because we hadn't been home to feed "Coyote" for a long time, so we transported what was left of the turkey back with us so he could have a Thanksgiving dinner too. Yes, we actually packed it in a garbage bag and drug it back to New Mexico. Coyote loved it, as you can tell by the photo. I've never seen a turkey picked so clean!
Kicking off the Holidays at the Fireside Chat
On December 2, I had such a good time in Santa Fe at the second annual Fireside Chat. Galleries up and down Canyon Road host festivities, with farolitos, bonfires, live music, seasonal beverages, and featured artists. I was the featured artist at Canyon Road Contemporary Art.

The week prior to the event, we were so busy packing and shipping calendars, going to the post office at least twice a day with armloads of envelopes, that I hadn't even thought about the holidays. This event really helped me get into the spirit of the season. How could I not, with glowing luminarias, festive chile lights, a fire ring, conversations and laughter surrounding me? And my good buddy Michael Hearne dropped by – so great to see him again.

Stray Hearts Fundraiser
I want to give a shout out to Stray Hearts Animal Shelter on a successful fundraiser. I attended their gala this weekend, where my painting, The Dog Walker (36x60), was auctioned and sold to some lovely people.
As a special treat, members of Ballet Taos performed. The talented young artists delighted the audience. We also enjoyed photos with puppies, a silent auction and delicious dinner. Fun!
