TWO INVITATIONS TO INTERGENERATIONAL EVENTS
Over the years, I have been a part of a number of conversations at Saint Paul’s that include discussion of the importance of having more children, youth, and young adults and families at Saint Paul’s. Looking at the data from the parish survey completed during our rector search process, it is clear that this is a legitimate concern and something that is needed to give balance to our church. During the self-examination that was also a part of the search process, it was clear that older members of our congregation are the lifeblood of the church. They are involved as leaders and volunteers in every area of life at Saint Paul’s.

Earlier this year, Father Eric Biddy asked me to work on developing and growing children and youth ministries at Saint Paul’s. We recognized that this ministry would be healthiest and most meaningful if we did this work in a way that connected our children and youth with our adults and with the ministries and fellowship that are part of our life together. Our children, youth, and young adults offer new energy, enthusiasm, and ideas to our church. Our older adults offer knowledge, skills, experience, wisdom, support, and encouragement to our church and younger parishioners. It is essential that we recognize the importance of all ages and that is why we have created a program that builds children, youth, and intergenerational ministries.

Over the past months, we have been intentional about providing new opportunities for parishioners of different ages to come together for service projects and ministries and to give our children and youth increased opportunities to participate in existing ministries at Saint Paul’s. This Sunday, we have two opportunities available for our parish members:

  • THE FRIENDLY BEASTS- Sunday at the 11 a.m. service: Our children and youth will lead our worship service with their performance of “The Friendly Beasts.” It is the story of Jesus’ birth told through the eyes of the animals. Our children, youth, and young people will participate with narration, singing, and acting. This performance is a gift from the young people of our church to our congregation. After the service, you are invited to a reception to celebrate our children and youth. This will be an opportunity for you to congratulate and connect with our young people and have your picture take with them. Special thanks to Julie Badger for coordinating the reception and for the families and individuals providing the refreshments.

  • CAROLING AND COCOA- Sunday at 5 p.m.- Children, youth, and parishioners of ALL ages are invited to join us for caroling. We will meet in Tyler Hall for slices of pizza and to pick up our music and driving instructions and then carpool to 3 to 4 residences in or close to downtown. We will spread holiday cheer and finish the evening with cocoa and cookies. Please feel free to email Kim Butler or call at 706.833.8541 for more information.

Thank you to all who have engaged in our programs this year. There will be many opportunities to get involved in the year to come. We look forward to having you share your gifts with our young people.

In Christ,

Kim Butler
Director of Children, Youth, and Intergenerational Ministries
POLK MONUMENT PROJECT UPDATE
In July 2022, the Vestry voted to move the black plaque on the Polk memorial to a new spot in the Narthex with context added to further explain the life of General Polk and his connection with Saint Paul’s. That plaque would be replaced in the castellation on the Chancel wall with similar material engraved with a Eucharist-centric verse. The gift of the chancel floor and the altar rail by the Polk family would be acknowledged by a new plaque on the Chancel north wall, adjacent to the door into the vesting room. All this is to occur, per a Vestry vote, by not using any operating funds.

Mr. Tom Robertson has been superintending this process and has chosen Mastercraft Flooring of Augusta to remove, replace and re-install the various components of this project. Mastercraft Flooring has worked with the Church in a number of projects in the past and is well qualified to help us undertake this project properly.

Prior to the July vote, the Vestry was aware of interest by a number of parishioners to contribute to the overall project cost, and we are now at a point to establish such a purse. If you would like to contribute, you can place a check in the mail or the collection plate before Christmas, earmarked “Polk Monument Project.” All donors are kept anonymous unless the Church is told differently for capital projects and if you want to stress anonymity, feel free to note so on the envelope with your contribution. Only the Church administrator will know the source of the gifts.

In Christ,

Cameron Nixon
Senior Warden

Practicing Our Faith: A Way of Life for a Searching People (6 sessions)

Our online formation book studies continue in January with Practicing our Faith: A Way of Life for a Searching People by Dorothy Bass. Books are available from Amazon and many book sellers and in the Narthex on Sunday and in the parish office during the week. ($20 donation). Sign up online using the link below.

“Practicing Our Faith offers help to Christians who are asking how our faith can help us discern what we might do and who we might become.

How can we live faithfully and with integrity in a world where the pace of existence is so fast and life's patterns are changing all around us? Can we conduct our daily lives in ways that help us not just get by but flourish--as individuals, as communities, and as a society in concert with creation and in communion with God?

These questions are on the hearts and minds of many seekers who are exploring spirituality today. They are also at the heart of Practicing Our Faith.”

A Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols
Sunday, January 1, 11 AM service
Christmastide is the joyous and short season between the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord and the Feast of the Epiphany. On the First Sunday of Christmas, we continue to celebrate with A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at 11:00 AM. This beloved tradition helps us to set the mystery of the incarnation into the larger sweep the biblical story of God’s salvation for the world. These are the stories that shape our lives as we pass through the church’s year of grace, year after year, season by season, and Sunday by Sunday.
Baptism Offered
January 8, The Feast of the Baptism of our Lord
The Prayer Book notes Holy Baptism is especially appropriate on four dates: at the Easter Vigil, on the Day of Pentecost, on All Saints' Day or All Saints' Sunday, and on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord.

We will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism on Sunday, January 8. All who wish to be baptized are invited to contact Fr. Eric.
