One of the realities of being a follower of Christ is that we are not given the option of being idle. There are some who would prefer this option and try to ignore the call of God but they are only deceiving themselves. God is a god of action. When we hear the story of creation, it is easy to assume that after God had done the work and took a break, God then just let everything operate on its own. However, when you read the fullness of Scripture, you quickly realize that this is not the case. God continues to actively involved in creation and in the lives of the humans which God created. With the Creator being One of action, how could we ever think that as believers, we could be idle.
Jesus demonstrated this sense of being active during his ministry on earth. He seldom remained in one area for an extended period of time. He was engaged in the lives and the communities of people all the time. Yes, he would take periods of rest (another example given to us in the creation story) but they would not be long. Jesus knew he was sent with a specific purpose and his focus was on completing the purpose for which he had been called.
We are being sent. There is a purpose the Lord has for us in this given time and place. Throughout our life, that purpose may change in small or in large ways. Whether our purpose has changed recently or we have just discovered our purpose does not matter. The reality is that there is something which the Lord has for us to do and we are to be about doing that work. This is what it means to be sent. It means being actively engaged in the work which has been set before us at this time and place.
Come on Sunday to worship as we explore more what it means to be sent.
Blessings,
Pastor Mark

The relatively new Fellowship Team has been busy this year trying to find opportunities to create fellowship. We want to thank everyone that has signed up and brought treats for fellowship time at Sunday worship. We have been trying out various table and seating arrangements. Please let us know what you think.
So far this year we have helped organize three events. Starting in January we organized the ever popular Soup Sunday. So many delicious soups to sample. The end of March we hosted the Easter brunch which was immediately after sunrise service. Then in May we held the community picnic. Great weather and wonderful food!
We have been busy working on other events for the rest of this year. We have tried to keep the old favorites going but also bringing back, with some modifications, older favorites as well. Your ideas and suggestions are always welcome!

Remember the first time you came to Balmoral?
Chances are you may recall someone warmly greeting you as you walked in the front door, welcoming you and encouraging you to fill out a name badge. Their smile made you feel “at home” even before you set foot in the sanctuary. Our congregation is a very friendly one, but the Welcoming Team wants to make sure no one is overlooked, so we need a special greeter before each worship service.
Each greeter would sign up for one Sunday a month to be at the front door about 10:40 a.m. to open the inside door to everyone who comes – members and visitors alike – and greet each one with a smile and a welcome. (Soon we also will have a gift bag the greeter can hand out to each visitor “family”). It is a simple “job” but one which can make a great difference in making sure all who come to Balmoral feel welcome.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Linda Warren, Janice Hill or Nancy Jordan.

BOOK CLUB
Tuesday, July 9
1:30pm
For our mid-year meeting on Tuesday, July 9 (1:30 p.m.) we are going to do something different: we will meet at
Otherlands Coffee Bar at 641 Cooper St. in midtown.
Our "assignment" is any story of your choosing from the many short story collections of the late Alice Munro, a highly acclaimed author of short stories who died last month. Ms. Munro received both the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Man Booker Prize. According to Wikipedia, the Canadian author's stories "explore human complexities in an uncomplicated prose style. Her writing established her reputation as a great author in the vein of Anton Chekhov." Her story collections are readily available in local libraries.
We will share our thoughts on the story(ies) each of us reads.
Looking further ahead, in August we will meet at the house of Jan Kaplan, and Robin Ashworth will lead us in a discussion of Remarkably Bright Creatures, by Shelby Van Pelt. Our September book will be Abide with Me by Elizabeth Stroutt, led by Bevery Hooker (location TBD.)
