This Week's Devotional - Listening for the Promise

By what power or by what name did you do this?”

- Acts 4:7b

Important people are mentioned in today’s passage. They were men of power and position; they were from the high priestly family. They were accompanied by the rulers, elders and scribes. These men made up the Jerusalem Sanhedrin, the ruling body of the Jews. The court was mostly made up of Sadducees, men from a sect of Judaism that did not believe in resurrection. Though some Jews believed in a doctrine of resurrection, the Sadducees adamantly rejected it.

This is why the disciples’ preaching was particularly disturbing to them. They could not allow the idea of resurrection to gain popularity among the people. They had to put a stop to it, so Peter and John were arrested. The catalyst for this arrest was the healing of the lame beggar who asked Peter and John for alms. Instead of money, Peter commanded the lame beggar to walk, by the name of Jesus. Peter gave the man a new life and then told the amazed crowds that it was not by his power or ability that the beggar was healed; the healing came by the power of the one they had crucified, the one God raised from the dead.

Peter told the people, “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.” He spoke about the forgiveness that comes from Jesus Christ. The court asked Peter and John about the power and name they invoked for the healing. Peter answered, “If we’ve been arrested because we kindly helped a cripple, then know this: it is Jesus’ name that healed the man.” Jesus is the source of their power.

The Sanhedrin might have let them go, except they did more than just heal the man. They offered forgiveness of sins, the same blasphemous crime that Jesus committed. The Sanhedrin, especially the high priests, rejected the capstone of everything the disciples preached: the resurrection of Jesus which gave Him the authority to transform the world. This was the crime for which they had been arrested.

The proclamation that Jesus is the only way to salvation took away the power of the Jewish leaders; that is why they destroyed Jesus in the first place and why the world still threatens the faithful today. We need not fear because Jesus continues to be the power and authority behind the forgiveness that blots out our sins.

Women's Bible Study

Women's Bible Study

Janet Zastrow and Nancy Wittmus are co-facilitating a Women's Bible Study, on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. The Study is based on the book Jesus Followers written by the daughter and granddaughter of Billy Graham. They share inspiring stories from their family life that offer compelling insights for leaving a legacy of faith.

Passing on our faith does not happen passively—it’s something we intentionally pursue with prayer and joy. Yet many of us struggle to know what it looks like to live out a contagious faith in today’s world. We long for spiritual wisdom on how to ignite faith in our children, grandchildren, and others we encounter.

Jesus Followers offers practical ideas, biblical teaching, and inspiring true stories from Anne Graham Lotz and her daughter Rachel-Ruth Lotz Wright for effectively running the race of faith and passing the Baton of Truth to the next generation.

Jesus Followers not only offers a glimpse into the living rooms and prayer closets of a faith-filled family, but it also equips you with the wisdom, motivation, and practical ideas for consistently and joyfully sharing your faith.

All women are invited to attend. Bring a friend. There is no cost for the study materials. Please send any questions to Janet at janetzastrow@att.net.

Music Ministry

Would you like to become familiar with the modern songs used in our worship ahead of the busy weekend?

We have two options to listen to the hymns for the upcoming Holy Week services and links to each of them are included below:

APRIL MISSION OF THE MONTH

Our mission is to empower men struggling with substance use disorder by offering a holistic treatment program focused on compassion, healing, and personal growth while fostering a compassionate community of accountability, guiding them on their journey to recovery.

Our residential program is a holistic experience that addresses men’s physical, emotional, and spiritual health needs by providing an atmosphere of strength and support. We offer dignity, accountability, and an opportunity to rebuild your life free from addiction.

To support this important Mission of the Month, you may include it in your weekly offering envelope or designate the donation as "Mission of the Month" in your online giving.

Serenity's three stages of support help clients live the life they deserve:

Recovery

We're more than just a residential treatment facility. We offer a supportive, peaceful environment where you can live your life on your terms. Here, clients will have access to supportive living and group recovery sessions and therapy, including individualized recovery plans just for them.

Stability

A part of supporting their success in recovery is helping them find stability through employment, which in turn helps build their self-sustainability. We support our program participants with career and skill building opportunities after successful clean time.

Spirit

Serenity Inns focuses on the mind, body and spirit. Our program was developed as a faith-based recovery support community with a focus on facilitating spiritual practices that include spirituality and giving back to our community.

"The Woman in the Library" by Sulari Gentill

In every person's story, there is something to hide...

The ornate reading room at the Boston Public Library is quiet, until the tranquility is shattered by a woman's terrified scream. Security guards take charge immediately, instructing everyone inside to stay put until the threat is identified and contained. While they wait for the all-clear, four strangers, who'd happened to sit at the same table, pass the time in conversation and friendships are struck. Each has his or her own reasons for being in the reading room that morning—it just happens that one is a murderer.

Award-winning author Sulari Gentill delivers a sharply thrilling read with The Woman in the Library, an unexpectedly twisty literary adventure that examines the complicated nature of friendship and shows us that words can be the most treacherous weapons of all.

This Week's Reflection

from Martin Luther

This is also learned from the nature of the Gospel, for the Gospel is a message and a testimony, which declares how the Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead, that he might remove sin, death and all evil from all who believe on him. If I recognize him as such a Savior, I have heard the Gospel aright, and he has in truth revealed himself to me.

- Martin Luther Church Postil, 1524

Facing tough times?

Need a Christian Friend?

Stephen Ministry is here to help.

Free, just like God's love.

Stephen Ministers are congregation members trained by Stephen Leaders to offer high-quality, one-to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. A Stephen Minister usually provides care to one person at a time, meeting with that person once a week for about an hour.

If you, or someone you know, could benefit from this important ministry, please contact Scott or Peggy Langelin at 262.853.0018.

A few reminders ....

Do you need a new Church Directory?

The Calvary Church Directory is available electronically or in paper format. If you'd like an electronic copy, please send an email to Sue Rowe at communications@calvarylc.com.

There are also printed copies available in the church office.

If there are any changes to your phone, email or address, please advise the Church office. Any updates should be submitted to Cindy Zilske at office@calvarylc.com.

Sanctuary Flowers

A wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion or remember a loved one is by sponsoring flowers at our altar. The cost is $35 and you may take them home following the Sunday morning worship. (If you'd prefer, you can leave the flowers at church to be enjoyed in the church office.)

The 2024 sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex, near the door to Fellowship Hall.

We invite you to provide

Hospitality Treats on Sunday

We invite you to stay after worship on Sunday mornings and enjoy fellowship time and a treat/cup of coffee in Fellowship Hall.

If you'd like to provide treats (donuts, bagels, etc.) for Sunday hospitality time, there is a sheet on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall. You may bring the treats (six dozen) and drop them off in the kitchen, or simply add a “P” behind your name, pay $30 to the church office and the treats will be purchased for you.

The sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board.  Thank you for your support!

Live Stream Attendance Link

If you watch our services via the Live Stream, please take a minute to let us know. There is now a link called "Online Worship Attendance" on the page where you access each week's service.

We appreciate you taking the time to complete this each week. It helps us know that our Live Stream is being viewed and by whom.

Thank you!

The right side of the Sanctuary (as you face the altar) is equipped with a hearing loop system which transmits an audio signal directly into a hearing aid via a magnetic field. This greatly reduces background noise, competing sounds, reverberation and other acoustic distortions that reduce clarity of sound.

Most hearing aids are equipped with a t-coil and connecting to this system is an easy switch on the hearing aid. If you need assistance during worship with this system, please reach out to an usher or any staff member.

The church office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until noon. The door that is closest to the office (NW corner) will be open during those hours.

Please check in with the office staff so we know you are in the building.

The office phone number is (262) 786-4010. Feel free to leave a message if you call after hours and we will contact you the next day.
