DANVILLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS TO ENHANCE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION FOR INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS

Danville, VA — Danville Community College (DCC) and the Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) have entered a groundbreaking partnership to expand Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at the Green Rock Correctional Center.


The partnership aims to equip incarcerated individuals with the skills, credentials, and career readiness necessary for successful reintegration into society.



This initiative builds upon DCC’s longstanding commitment to education at Green Rock Correctional Center (GROC), where the college has awarded 117 Career Studies Certificates (CSCs) in fields such as Electrical, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration, Custodial Maintenance, Drafting-Surveying, and Computer-Aided Drafting since Fall 2016.

AVERETT UNIVERSITY NAMES REV. DR. DAVID JOYCE AS NEXT PRESIDENT

Averett University’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev. Dr. David Joyce as the 15th president of the university. Dr. Joyce will be installed as president on January 6, 2025.


He will replace Dr. Tiffany M. Franks, who will be retiring from Averett University after serving almost 17 years as its president.



Dr. Joyce brings with him 27 years of experience as a college president – eight years as president of Union College in Kentucky, 10 years as president of Ripon College in Wisconsin, and most recently nine years as president of Brevard College in North Carolina.

SOVAH HEALTH DANVILLE HOSTS OPEN HOUSE TO INTRODUCE NEWLY RENOVATED ER FACILITY

On December 18, Sovah Health Danville introduced their new Emergency Room facility with a Grand Opening & Open House event.


The community and many health care professionals packed the house in honor of the occasion.


This new facility offers state of the art technology to enhance patient care. We are thankful to have Sovah Health providing healthcare services to our community citizens.

IALR CELEBRATES 14TH ATDM GRADUATING COHORT

The Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program celebrated the accomplishments of its 14th cohort with a graduation ceremony at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) on Friday, Dec. 13.


The event recognized 71 graduates who completed four months of intensive manufacturing training housed on the IALR campus in Welding, CNC Machining and Nondestructive Testing.



The ceremony featured a keynote address by Capt. Matthew A. Hawkins, Director of the Submarine Force Reserve Component, and remarks from two student speakers, Jack McNeel and Trevor Saunders.

TUNSTALL VOLLEYBALL HONORED FOR SUCCESSFUL SEASON

The Tunstall High School Girls Volleyball team finished the season as Piedmont District Regular Season Champions and Piedmont District Tournament Champions. The team advanced to the Region 3D Quarterfinals victory over Abingdon and made a strong appearance in the Region 3D Semifinals. 

To celebrate the team’s achievements, the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors approved a Certificate of Excellence at its December 17, 2024, business meeting. 


The Lady Trojans finished with season with an overall record of 21-3 and an undefeated district record of 12-0 during the regular season, extending to 14-0 with tournament games. Throughout the season, the Lady Trojans demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork. 


The team’s accomplishments this season brought immense pride to Tunstall High School and the community, showcasing the power of hard work, determination and teamwork.


The Board expresses its deepest congratulations and admiration to the Tunstall Lady Trojans Volleyball Team for these accomplishments and wish the team the best in its future endeavors.

CITIZEN ACADEMY COMPLETES 2024 PROGRAM

Fifteen Pittsylvania County residents received their “graduation” certificates after completing the 2024 Citizens Academy: Government 101. 



The Citizens Academy is designed to give participants an overview of the many departments, services and functions within the County government structure. The 2024 session concluded on December 12, 2024.
