MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Jo Healey

Executive Director, BABC

Northern California

Dear Members and Friends of the BABC Northern California,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I’m filling in for our President, Maya Mancuso, as she takes time off to enjoy her maternity leave. All of us at the BABC wish to congratulate Maya and Chase on the safe arrival of their happy, healthy and gorgeous baby Luca.

The New Year always brings with it a great opportunity for contemplation and renewal. With that said, I’d like to ask you, our members and community at large, how we can help you in 2023. What would you like your BABC to do for you this year? Please take a moment to complete our quick survey and give us your ideas and feedback. Thank you.

Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all who joined us on Friday, December 9th at The Fairmont Hotel for the 59th Annual BABC Christmas Luncheon. We welcomed over 750 guests to the Bay Area’s best holiday party in town and helped Raphael House by raising over $14,600. Thanks also to the many event sponsors and donors – you can see them here – we couldn’t have done it without you! Check out the photos and video below.

We have a couple of flagship educational events upcoming. Our Annual Economic Forecast Luncheon will be held at the City Club on January 25th from 11.30am – 2pm. Please join us to learn what’s in store for the economy this year. Once again moderated by Financial Times’ West Coast Editor, Richard Waters, we also have the honor of welcoming to the panel Ryan Wang, HSBC’s US Economist, to present his views on the global economy. Our friend, Sean Randolph, at the Bay Area Council Economic Institute, will provide insights on the expected forecast for the Bay Area economy and Beverley Chadwick from SambaNova will provide her thoughts on how the predictions made will impact the industry throughout the year.

Save the Date for the 12th Annual Funding, Exits and IPO’s on March 1st. Venue to be confirmed and additional speakers to be announced.

On the social networking front, Brits in Marin can join us on Thursday January 26th at The Junction Beer Garden – always a good time (free to attend) – and on February 11th, our friends at the Mostly British Film Festival have an action-packed lineup of movies to view. On March 9th, calling all friends from Commonwealth Countries to come together for an evening of networking at Werqwise in San Francisco and on March 14th, our Young Professionals Committee has put together a happy hour at the fabulous Wingtip.

Finally, on behalf of Maya and the BABC Board of Directors, a huge welcome to all our new and renewing members (below) and thank you to all of our members who make up the British American Business Council Northern California. We look forwarding to working with you and seeing you at our events.

LETTER FROM THE BRITISH CONSUL GENERAL

Joe White, MBE
Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco

Dear BABC Members,

Let me first begin by wishing all of you a very happy new year on behalf of all of us here at the British Consulate-General in San Francisco. It is my sincere hope that you had an enjoyable and restful festive period. We now firmly close the book on what became a more momentous year in the life of the United Kingdom than any of us could have possibly imagined. As we look ahead to 2023, I am confident that we will move forward together with a renewed sense of commitment.  The opportunities before us are tremendous and I am excited to continue to develop our deep partnership with the BABC.

This year will see the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. For many of us this will be the first coronation in our lifetimes, and it will undoubtedly be a moment of significant historical importance and an opportunity to celebrate the enduring influence of the UK around the world. We look forward to celebrating alongside all of you in May.

January has already begun at a blistering pace. We were pleased to host the Minister for Industry and Investment Security, Nusrat Ghani, and the Minister for Investment, Lord Dominic Johnson, for the annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference here in San Francisco where they both undertook robust programmes supported by our Department for International Trade team. I will be visiting Washington DC to take part in the official-level dialogues of the UK-US Tech Partnership, deepening our collaboration with the United States to enable a new era of strategic cooperation and protect our technology advantage. In the coming weeks we will have additional visitors from the UK to discuss topics as diverse as autonomous vehicles to sustainable agriculture. It is an important reminder of the width and breadth of the expertise in this region and the extraordinary range of policy areas in which we cooperate with our partners.

I am tremendously grateful for the tireless work of the BABC in supporting transatlantic business every single day, year in and year out. Here’s to another exciting year in UK-US relations!

33rd ANNUAL BABC ECONOMIC FORECAST LUNCHEON (#AELunch2023)

The British-American Business Council Northern California  cordially invites you to the 33rd Annual BABC Economic Forecast Luncheon at the City Club in San Francisco.

Moderated by Richard Waters, West Coast Editor for the Financial Times, our panelists will be delving into the global and local economies and sharing their expertise on the path forward for business as we emerge from the global pandemic.

The last few years have seen profound economic changes, from remote work to accelerated digitalization, and a less stable global landscape. The Bay Area is at the center of many of these shifts.

Our panelists will discuss the implications and the road ahead, both locally and globally covering:

  • The US and China seem farther apart than ever. What does the road ahead look like for US-China business and can we still cooperate?
  • How has Russia’s war in Ukraine changed the security and economic landscape?
  • How are global supply chains realigning and what does that mean for companies in the US and the West?
  • Globalization seems on the defensive. What is the outlook for trade and new trade agreements
  • How strong is the recovery from Covid and how far do we have to go?
  • How is remote work changing the business landscape and the structure of our cities and what does the future of commercial real estate and prospects for recovery in downtown San Francisco look like?
  • Some prominent companies have left the Bay Area. Why is that, and is it a trend?

BritishAmerican Business

A very happy new year to members and friends of BritishAmerican Business. I hope everyone was able to enjoy at least a few days of downtime before heading back into the fray.

The new year newspapers are full of the usual forecasts and predictions for the year ahead which are always worth reading to get a sense of the prevailing mood as much as for the likely accuracy of the forecasts. In fact, the one thing you know for certain is that the forecasts, especially economic, are going to be wrong, it is just a question of by how much! But the more interesting stories are the qualitative predictions, the evaluation of risks, the sense of optimism or otherwise that is in the minds of the authors, the economists, the think tanks and journalists that produce these pieces.
