"An Amazing Experience" – Camp Marshall 2024

Sixteen high school students spent a lively three days at Dodona Manor last week participating in the inaugural Camp Marshall.

These future leaders honed their skills – and had fun – in a myriad of ways each day. On Monday, students competed and boosted their communications and collaboration skills through a team-building “escape room in-a-box” followed by an interactive history lesson about General Marshall by Marshall Historian Rachel Thompson, and a guided tour of his home, Dodona Manor.

Tuesday featured a series of teambuilding games, including a “Mini-Olympics.” In the afternoon, students worked together to assemble, paint and install Dodona Manor’s first ever Little Free Library.

The final day opened with students discussing books they selected to place into the library. Campers wrote a note explaining why they selected their book and inserted them inside the covers for patrons of the library. The students then heard from a panel of accomplished leaders – Ethical Leadership Program Director Pete Janhunen, Board Member Robin Milton and Former Navy SEAL Matthew Pierson.

For the closing activity, students worked in three teams to devise a plan for a values-based mission to help the local community.

Thank you to all our students and staff – TEAM MARSHALL – for the amazing effort on all fronts!

A Time for Leadership: Marshall and Final Victory in World War II

In the wake of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, the Marshall Center is preparing to share insights from the final months of World War II, when leadership made all the difference. From the “longest day” of June 6, 1944, to the signing of Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945, allied leaders navigated a series of pivot points on the way to final victory over fascism and preparation for the Allies to “win the peace.”

In coming months, we will consider how General Marshall and his fellow leaders arrived at decisions during this exceptionally chaotic and confusing 15-month period. We will also invite contemporary leaders to share their insights into the risks and challenges leaders face—and overcome—in uncertain times, asking them how they decide the problem even as they navigate the fog of uncertainty.

New Video: CISA Director Jen Easterly Sits Down With ELC Alumni

In a new video, CISA Director Jen Easterly, recipient of the 2024 George C. Marshall Award in Ethical Leadership, discusses her leadership journey and lessons she has learned throughout her career with students who attended “Five-Star Character: The George C. Marshall Ethical Leadership Conference.

In an extended conversation with the students, Easterly shared personal experiences and discussed her key influences. She recounted some of the toughest decisions she has had to make and the importance of authenticity and integrity in leadership roles.

Students posed thoughtful questions on how ethical leadership lessons they’ve explored in the Marshall Center’s ELC program apply in real-world scenarios, including:

  • What are your key influences?
  • What’s a difficult decision you’ve had to make?
  • How do you establish yourself as a leader?

We encourage you to check out and share this compelling new video, which features highlights from the conversation, the latest edition of the Marshall Center’s Profiles in Leadership Series!

July 17 Off Duty: The Inspiration Behind “The Great Escape"

Join us Wednesday, July 17 from 5:30 – 7 p.m.for an in-person discussion of a World War II-era clandestine program that linked Military Intelligence to US POWs with Peabody and Emmy Award winning documentary film producer, director and writer, David Taylor.

It started with a single paragraph in The Washington Post. A flagpole was being raised at a little-know Army post—Fort Hunt, VA—to honor a then-secret U.S. Army unit set up during World War II, while George Marshall was Chief of Staff. Taylor was intrigued. Eventually, the full story emerged. A World War II-era clandestine program, run out of Fort Hunt, had linked the top-secret Military Intelligence Service X (or MiSX) unit to U.S. prisoners of war held in 63 German POW camps. MiSX was based on the British program known as MI9. The MiSX effort had provided the real story behind the legendary film “the Great Escape.”

Off Duty is an outdoor speaker series hosted by the George C. Marshall International Center. Each event features a speaker discussing a topic that touches on history adjacent to George C. Marshall and the times in which he lived. The events run around 90 minutes, with light refreshments and opportunities for networking before and after the discussion.

Preserving Naval History: the USS George C. Marshall

Scale Model of Nuclear Submarine Brings a Piece of Cold War History to Dodona

In June, the Marshall Center was grateful to receive a true-to-life scale model of the USS George C. Marshall (SSBN 654) courtesy of our friends at Naval Submarine League.

The USS Marshall was among the first 41 American ballistic missile submarines built and deployed during the Cold War period and played a significant role in America’s strategic defense beginning in 1965.

Each of the 41 boats was named after an American who played a major role in the fight for the nation’s freedom. The USS Marshall and her sister boats boasted 16 missile tubes, which housed nuclear-armed Polaris missiles.

The ship was built in Newport News, VA, and was launched on May 21, 1965. Katherine Marshall, widow of General Marshall, had the honor of serving as the ship’s sponsor and breaking a champagne bottle across her bow.

During its 26 years of service, SSBN 654 conducted 78 long-range, strategic deterrent patrols. Sailing mainly from Holy Lock, Scotland, alternating “Blue” and “Gold” crews of 120 men operated and navigated the ship with patience, perseverance and precision – much like their ship’s namesake.

Thank you to the Naval Submarine League for providing the Marshall Center with this striking scale model, which we are proud to display at Dodona Manor!
