Weekly Update

A Message from Principal Simpson

Diana

Dear Parents,

Thanks to everyone who gifted staff through RaiseRight this holiday season! The thoughtfulness and generosity of the BFA community never ceases to amaze me! You may have noticed some of our staff in jammies or a comfy fleece recently—the administration also has been working to show our appreciation to staff with themed dress days and fun surprises during December. And tomorrow, the BFA Board is rewarding us all with a holiday breakfast. Every member of our team gives their best each day to support our students; and, we’re grateful for the creativity and energy they bring to their roles, as well as their continued dedication to ensuring every student receives an exceptional education.

As I addressed last week, our change in math curriculum has been a big adjustment for everyone this fall, but as we tell the students—we can do hard things! I admire the tenacity of our teachers and the drive of our students as they delve into the new curriculum. In observing math classes across the building, I can attest that students are learning! It's fulfilling to watch students discover new vocabulary as well as learn different ways to tackle problems. We are still in the implementation phase of this curriculum, and we’d like your feedback as we begin the second trimester. To that end, please complete the math survey we sent last week if you have not already done so. Your feedback is essential to our improvement process.

We have a limited supply of COVID test kits available. If you would like a BinaxNOW COVID test kit, please send an email to BFA health to request one. We'll send it home with the youngest/only member of your family next Wednesday.

Next week is going to be a very festive, short week! Be sure to take a look at the Holiday Spirit Week themes our Student Council put together for us. We'll send the next newsletter out on Wednesday, Dec. 21, before we leave for Winter Break.

Have a terrific weekend!

Volunteer Recognition

BFA loves its volunteers, and we want to show our appreciation for all of your work. Each month a volunteer will be chosen as the Volunteer of the Month, and will get exclusive use of the dedicated, reserved Volunteer of the Month spot in the parking lot for their respective month.

In addition, each month a volunteer will be randomly chosen through a drawing to win a fun, surprise gift. Just log at least ONE hour of volunteer service in the month prior to the drawing, and you’re eligible to WIN!

Thanks to all our volunteers for your continued support of BFA!

Congratulations Donna Esterline!

Donna

For the month of December, Donna Esterline has been selected as the Ben Franklin Academy Volunteer of the Month! She is being recognized for all of the time she has spent volunteering in the lunch room and the art room. Donna has truly set herself apart; she is an excellent example of outstanding volunteerism! We love having you in the building—thank you, Donna!

Donna and her husband, Ray, have five grandchildren, two of whom are BFA students. Their grandson, Jack, is in seventh grade and their granddaughter, Whitley, is in fifth grade. When asked what she likes best about BFA, Donna replied, “We feel so lucky to be close enough to our grandkids and their school allowing us to be involved in their daily lives. I love BFA! The staff is always friendly and so helpful. I like that you always see parents and grandparents at the school volunteering. BFA has a wonderful community and we’re happy our grandkids are part of it.”

Congratulations again, Donna. We’re so glad you’re part of our community!

If you know someone who should be considered for volunteer of the month for outstanding volunteerism, please email Janelle Nichols, PTO President.

Gift card

Thank You Sandra Tompkins

This month, Sandra Tompkins is the winner of our drawing for her volunteer time in November, and has won a $10 gift card to Starbucks. She enjoyed volunteering in the library last month, and keeping scores/stats during volleyball games in previous months.

Congratulations, Sandra! And, thank you again for helping out around school!

Take Action to Ensure You Receive Communications

As we notified you last week, beginning in January, most communications from BFA will be sent through School Messenger. Parents should ensure contact preferences within their IC Parent Portal account are updated and confirm that the appropriate boxes are checked to receive General, Attendance and Emergency notifications.

To verify that your profile is set up correctly, simply login to IC, select the ‘User Menu’ (the person icon on the upper, right side of the screen), select ‘Contact Preferences’ and indicate your preferences, then click 'Save.' You should also create personal contacts using the phone numbers below on your own phone so you know who is calling/texting:

  • DCSD Emergency phones calls: 855-695-9448
  • DCSD General phone calls: 877-279-4061

If you have questions about how to update your contact information in IC, contact Colleen Bobbin, BFA's director of admissions and records.

Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.

Vision:
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, the arts, and literacy. We will be a data-driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering social emotional development, character, sports, and nature.

13 Virtues:
Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Purity and Humility.
