 Dear Beloveds in Christ,

This Saturday, Earth Day, the Episcopal Creation Care Justice organization begins a 10-day period of prayer, liturgical focus and advocacy with the theme “Honoring God in Creation." Our services on Sunday and next Sunday will have prayers, hymns, and other elements of the liturgy that reflect the theme.

I hope you will be with us in worship and prayer!

In the peace of Christ,

Kate+

Phishing Scams

A reminder that Rev. Kate Bast nor any of the lay leaders of this church will never text or email directly you asking you for money or donations. There is a rise in phishing scams where someone posting from a phone number or email that appears to be from clergy or lay leaders are attempting to steal money from parishioners or others on a mailing list. When you think you've received a suspicious communication, please contact Kate+, John Jacobs, or Mike Iacono directly.

A Prayer for Priest-In-Charge Discernment

May the search for clergy be guided by wisdom, discernment, and divine inspiration. May those involved in the process find strength and clarity in their decisions, seeking leaders who embody compassion, integrity, and a deep commitment to the spiritual well-being of the community. May their efforts be blessed with success in discovering individuals dedicated to serving with humility and love.

Afghan Ministry Update

Our Afghan Ministry and Sewing Seeds business continues in positive directions. Small accomplishments are major milestones for many of the women who did not have the opportunity to work outside of the home, drive a car or start a business in Afghanistan. And at least some of the women also have a stronger voice and more equal footing in their relationships with husbands at home. Brookside Tuesdays continue and with Ramadan over, potlucks resume as well as excited chatter when they see and greet each other. Many of the women came dressed in their Eid finery on Tuesday. On average there are between 10 and 12 women on any given Tuesday. There would be more but now we have five woman with jobs! Almost all of them are keen to get their license and the husbands are very encouraging. Hansi led a spirited enrichment session Tuesday on learning road signs. We have a few more sessions and then when the kids get out of school we move outdoors for the third summer of Camp Brookside. We put a big push on getting the kids into summer school and we were successful in getting 100% of the school age kids into a variety of different free programs appropriate for their level of English proficiency, academic and other interests. The push on English literacy for the adults continue with Hansi leading the charge. She has been successful in setting up evening zoom classes with a trained instructor for some of the women and expanding lessons for the men and some of the other women in their homes. In fact David Glenn has volunteered to help with lessons for the men. How you can help? Consider sponsoring an In-home sewing seeds party. Think Avon! Our offerings have widened and quality continues to improve. Or if you have connections to anyone with a retail business that would add some of our products, that would be most helpful. We can always use Joanne Fabric gift cards and donations of fun fabrics for aprons, pillows, napkins, placemats, gift bags, microwave cozies and cosmetic cases. With new families continuing to arrive, we have immediate need for microwaves, pots& pans and electric tea kettles. Very soon we will be on the hunt for ac’s and fans. Consider joining us on a Tuesday and please pray for our Afghan community both here and in Afghanistan as well as refugees everywhere.

Thank you,

Hansi and Karen

St. Peter’s Church is sponsoring a Mother’s Day diaper drive to benefit the Diaper Depot in Waltham.  The Diaper Depot provides over 5,000 diapers per month to 120 Waltham residents who qualify for public assistance. Each eligible child receives 45-60 diapers per month. The Depot is open one Saturday a month and runs out of Christ Church, an Episcopal Church on Main Street in Waltham.

Please consider donating a box, or more, particularly SIZES 5 & 6 since these are the most needed.

There are three ways to donate:

  1. Purchase diapers and drop off at St. Peter’s Church (320 Boston Post Road) Monday-Thursday 9:00am-2:00 pm and Fridays 9:00am-1:00pm. Please use the side door adjacent to Rt. 20 near the mailbox. Call the office number (781-891-3200) for entry and leave the diapers in the entry way. Parishioners can leave diapers in the Narthex during Sunday worship services.
  2. Purchase and ship directly to the Diaper Depot's coordinator, Erin Jensen, at: 62 Cabot Street, Waltham, MA 02453
  3. If you prefer to make a monetary donation, either send a check payable to Christ Church with "Diaper Depot" in the memo line or use the church's PayPal link (http://www.christchurchwaltham.org/giving/) and add "Diaper Depot" in the memo line. The church's address is: Christ Church, 750 Main Street, Waltham, MA 02451

Did you know:

  • Diaper need effects nearly 1 in 3 women in the US
  • Diapers cost approximately $18 a week per child
  • Food stamps and WIC do NOT pay for diapers
  • Many parents struggling to pay rent and food cannot afford the cost of an adequate diaper supply (1:3 mothers cut back on basic essentials to afford diapers for their kids)

Many thanks for considering this request and please contact Anne Ruggles (asruggles@gmail.com) with any questions.

Donation deadline is Monday, May 13th
