Patriotism seemed really flexible to me growing up. It covered a lot of ground. I still hold to the benefit of that as loving one’s country can be for many reasons and we can show our affection for our country with praise, passion, and commitment to the ideals of our founders. At times Patriotism seems to get coopted to fit into our own narrow preferences. I will strive to keep my patriotism out of a provincial neighborhood and will think of great ways to reassure myself why I love where I live and my first choice today is that we live in the birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll.:)
So, here is a list of songs that speak overtly and/or subtly to my respect for the USAs ability to be flexible to us all:
- Land of Hopes and Dreams – Bruce Springsteen. The live version is a must. I think I have used this song before but it is so good it is worth using again!
- American in Me – Steve Forbert. It's a great song from an artist you maybe haven’t listened to a lot. He has some good stuff!
- City of Immigrants – Steve Earle
- Rockin’ in the Free World – Neil Young's Live version is the best I think. He sings one with Pearl Jam too that is worth looking up on YouTube.
- With God on Our Side – Bob Dylan from MTV Live
- American Land – Bruce Springsteen. Get your Irish Dance Shoes on.
- Living in the City – Stevie Wonder
- My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys – Willie Nelson
- Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You To Heaven – John Prine
- America the Beautiful – Ray Charles
