July 2024

July brings continued mixed market conditions and

a time to remember our freedoms.

One of my favorite summer days is the 4th of July. It's a great day to celebrate how much I care about where I am from. I am grateful that a very normal person like me lives in a country where I can have the opportunity to own a small business and work with great people. I feel fortunate for this gift and, as we enter the latest stage of our country, I don’t take it for granted.

Peace,

Will

Market Thoughts -

July 2024

Commonwealth CIO Brad McMillan recaps June’s market and economic news. June was a good month for financial markets. Most stocks were up in the low- to mid-single digits, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq hit record highs, and bond returns were positive on falling interest rates. International results were more mixed—developed markets pulled back slightly while emerging markets were up. Solid economic growth and slowing inflation supported these positive results, and consumer inflation also started to drop.

Will's top ten USA tribute songs

Patriotism seemed really flexible to me growing up. It covered a lot of ground. I still hold to the benefit of that as loving one’s country can be for many reasons and we can show our affection for our country with praise, passion, and commitment to the ideals of our founders. At times Patriotism seems to get coopted to fit into our own narrow preferences. I will strive to keep my patriotism out of a provincial neighborhood and will think of great ways to reassure myself why I love where I live and my first choice today is that we live in the birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll.:)

So, here is a list of songs that speak overtly and/or subtly to my respect for the USAs ability to be flexible to us all:

  1. Land of Hopes and Dreams – Bruce Springsteen. The live version is a must. I think I have used this song before but it is so good it is worth using again!
  2. American in Me – Steve Forbert. It's a great song from an artist you maybe haven’t listened to a lot. He has some good stuff!
  3. City of Immigrants – Steve Earle
  4. Rockin’ in the Free World – Neil Young's Live version is the best I think. He sings one with Pearl Jam too that is worth looking up on YouTube.
  5. With God on Our Side – Bob Dylan from MTV Live
  6. American Land – Bruce Springsteen. Get your Irish Dance Shoes on.
  7. Living in the City – Stevie Wonder
  8. My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys – Willie Nelson
  9. Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You To Heaven – John Prine
  10. America the Beautiful – Ray Charles

Heidi shares an update on her puppy Hazel.

What’s Hazel been up to besides being the cutest dog? Hazel went on her first lake glass-hunting adventure last week and enjoyed the long walk on the sandy beach. While at the lake she found snapping turtle eggs that the raccoons were after, no she didn’t have any for breakfast! Hazel has discovered frogs hopping in the grass, chasing after them never to catch one which I am grateful for! Hazel is having a great summer. Enjoy your summer too!
